Email Server Build

Hi Guys,
I am putting together an email server, here are my parts list

Istarusa d300 3u case
Msi G41M-P25
Socket 775 Q8300, 2.50, quad core
8gb Kingston ddr3
Hitachi 500gb sas hd, 15000 rpm (got for free)

So the question, should I use the free sas drive or use reg Sata?

If I use the sas drive should I buy another drive and use it in raid? What sas controller is best for this setup?

I am going to use win 7 pro for this setup with wamp.
I am using hmail server and squirrel mail to complete the setup.

Would it be wise to host my own website on this server?
The website is business going to be uses as a business front.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Why even host a server for something as mundane as email? Just use Google apps and call it a day.

I agree with you but I am a bit old school and I like having my emails on a private server. I also love being different.

I don't see the need for a SAS drive for just a home email server. I would run a RAID 1 or RAID 5 setup if you are concerned about uptime. If you are just concerned about backup, I would probably just use 1 drive with a good backup routine.

You can use the SAS drive if you just want for the fact that it was free, just remember it is going to be loud, put out some decent heat, and has a probability of failing quicker than a standard drive (just based on the speed aspect of it: 15000 RPM vs 7200 RPM).

For just mail:
If it's only for you (and you're not a pharma spammer 😉 ), you could just run a linux virtual machine on one of your desktops.

But given this:

... you're probably better off with professional hosting for both the mail and website.

Not everybody wants Google trolling their e-mails for marketing information, especially businesses.

That ship has already sailed I'm afraid. Any email you send is likely going to end up transiting Google at some point.

OK, in that case host a machine on Amazon EC2, Rackspace Cloud, etc. The smallest EC2 instance (t1.micro) is $15/mo., more than sufficient for email, will have better reliability and connectivity than anything you could dream of hosting locally.
