Email - Program to notify me when I get mail

Like gmail, is there a small program that will check my email regularly and send me a notification of when I get it? I would use Outlook but I use my work email for that and am not sure if they mind me mixing and adding accounts to it.

The email I want to check is a pop3/smtp email. Any ideas?
 
Have you considered getting an email client instead? I use The Bat, and it not only has an animated system tray icon when email arrives, it also has a ticker that appears and scrolls the messages to let you decide which to open.
