If you have Outlook open, you can set it to display a notification when new mail arrives. It's in Tools -> Options -> E-mail Options (under E-mail) -> Display a notification when new mail arrives. That's under Outlook 2002, but it should be the same under previous versions of Outlook. Hope this helps.
