Any of you use online based email accounts only or do you POP3 or IMAP at home?

I was thinking of moving over completely too online based email only.

I currently have two email accounts that I access through pop3 at home, I can also access them through webmail, but things are usually not in sync.

I was thinking of having those two email accounts forwarded to Gmail and then I can still email back with the feature on gmail of choosing a different account to send from.

My only problem with Gmail it?s the restriction on file attachments.

I personally can't stand using webmail for too long. I have my own IMAP server at home to which gmail forwards all of my gmail. I usually connect to it via mutt and ssh, but I also have IMP webmail setup.

My main problem with Gmail is the fact that they won't let you use folders to organize your mail, I know they want to promote their search tools but that limitation is just dumb IMO.

I've been using gmail for a while now, and I think their organizational labels are superior to folders. I label EVERYTHING in my mailing list address. If I want to see just those things I do a search on the label (click on the label name on the left). It takes a bit of getting used to, and I didn't like it much at first. Now I think it's just bad ass.

I wish I had the search capabilities I have in gmail in other MUAs. :(

mutt can use regexps =) Although to use them it has to download all of the messages so if you're using it with IMAP it's slow.

I tried IMAP for a little bit, and the service its not what i didnt like, it was the fact that Outlook sucks with IMAP, unfortunately, I use my outlook to sync with my PDA so switch has not been an option.

Another issue, why i'm thinking about switching is the fact that i can check my personal emails at work, but i can't send. I'm not allowed to use there SMTP server, I also can use my ISP SMTP because they block anyone who is not on their IP range.

I will have the same problem next semester at school that i have at work. I will be able to recieve email through the Wifi network, but i won't be able to send and if they do provide an SMTP server to use, it will get annoying about switching setting when i'm home and at school.

I hate Outlook and I hate PDAs so that's not an issue for me =)

As it should be, my SMTP and my ISP's SMTP servers are setup the same way. But since I use an ssh tunnel as a sort of minimal VPN I can send mail just fine because the traffic to my SMTP server originates from inside of my personal network.

Another thing my SSH tunnel helps me work around =) All of my mail clients point to 127.0.0.1 so no matter how I'm connected to the Internet, my configuration is the same.

That's too much work.

In general, yes. I don't use them often, mostly cause of the speed problem of having to download each message to search it, but usually searching on subject is enough and since mutt already has them downloaded using the 'limit' operator is really fast and is 'good enough' most of the time.

Update:
I went ahead and switch all my email accounts to be forward to Gmail. I'm also using some cool greasemonkey scrips to identify emails from different accounts.
I guess i'm dumping outlook for now...
