Just sold something on Ebay (small ticket item....less than $100) and the guy emailed me with this question. I'm not sure what he's meaning or if it's safe for me to tell him it's ok. Here's the email:

Hey. I got a problem confirming my address on paypal. I moved recently and I no longer have a valid credit card account, which makes address confirmation a real pain (AAC). Your auction doesn't state that you only ship to a confirmed address, but sometimes that is the case so I was wondering if I could still pay with paypal. You'd save me a trip to the post office with it. It's no biggie if you don't, but it would be nice if you could, then I could pay via echeck to paypal and then use paypal to pay you. Check out my references, I buy and sell on ebay too and I am interested in the item to replace mine which I dropped and broke the glass.

Now what does he mean and should I tell him it's ok? He attached a copy of what looks like a Paypal page with his "old" (?) address showing. Along with that he has an attached email with his "new" address from Paypal.
He's feedback on Ebay is good. Like 21 positives or something.

Does your auction state you take money orders? This sounds kinda fishy - just get a money order to be safe. (I would)

Tell them to send a money order. I would not ship to an unconfirmed address. 21 positives doesn't mean crap to me. :)

Better to be safe than sorry.

Give him a few days to get the money transferred to his paypal account, then you'll be able to get your dough....Like always, don't send until the transaction goes through, shouldn't be a problem with paypal though. Sounds like he's just having to send the money to paypal first, which takes about 3-4 business days, then you'll have it.
Had that happen to me once.

Basically, in Paypal, you can have a confirmed address, which is nothing more than an address that matches a billing address on a credit card attached to the account. Paypal will deny you a lot of anti-fraud protection if you send to an unconfirmed address.

It's really a judgement call. I like to have things shipped to my office, but of course I can't confirm that address, and I often ask Ebay sellers the same thing, although not in such a convoluted way. Weird stories like that always make me nervous. Usually I just say something like "If possible, please ship to this address, however I understand that you may not be comfortable to ship to an unconfirmed address. If that is the case, it's no problem to ship to my confirmed address." His story sounds screwy because just because you move doesn't make your credit card invalid....

I think if I was in your shoes and since he said it wasn't a big deal, I'd probably just explain to him that I'd prefer not to ship to an unconfirmed address and it would be best for both of us if he sent a money order instead and sorry for the inconvenience, thanks for being so understanding.

good idea on the money order. It's slow, but it's a lot safer then sending to some crazy address.

Thanks guys

I pretty much agree with all that has been posted so far but I would remind all the "good traders" that have ever ventured to the "dark side" of ebay that there was a time when we ALL had just 21 positive evals. Saying that it "doesn't mean squat" is a bit harsh.
Yeah, probably tell the guy to send the money order and be nice about it. But keep in mind that we've almost all been there. Not judging him as a trustworthy buyer or a jerk; but remember that we all started somewhere.

I agree.

I only have 10 positives but I feel I'm one of the best ebay'ers out there. I pay my auctions like the second they are done and ship what I sell the next day.

I have similar situations..

I have a few ocassion that ebay buyers' shipping address in ebay checkout MISMATCH their paypal shipping address, and their paypal shipping address is unconfirmed

when I question the buyer for the mismatch shipping address, most of them reply me that the shipment will be going to their close family relatives, cousin, gf, parent.. etc..

I do notice paypal policy that shipping to unconfirmed paypal address will not be covered by the PayPal Seller Protection Policy.

Important Note: BUYER has provided an Unconfirmed Address. If you are shipping items to xxxx please keep in mind that you will not be covered by the PayPal Seller Protection Policy.

am I playing "russian roulette" ? :Q

my "safe" and "ok" assumptions are that

1. I specify them to use paypal instant transfer
2. their paypal email = ebay email (unless both of their a/c is hijacked !)
3. most of them have good feedback..

pls advice, thanks in advance

jimmyhaha,
You are probably as safe as you can be in that situation. Besides, the PayPal "Protection Policy" is basically useless anyway. Too many loopholes and other crap to get them (paypal) off the hook if something goes wrong.
