Email Address

Well, I've been working for about 7 years for a company and have been using a email with my name on it (ie. first.last@mycompany.com). Now I will be quitting that company (in bad terms), can they use my email address in any way shape or form? Is that legal?

Let me know.
 
The email address belongs to the company. They can use it any way they see fit.

Although why they would want to is beyond me.
 
it isn't "your" email address

it belongs to the company before and now and after you don't work there anymore

After working for 7 years, there are clients that have built relationship with me and not necessarily the company. While I can contact many of them, I don't think I can contact all of them letting them know that i will be transferring companies.

Naturally, I don't want my company to use my "name" to curb business.

Please advice Anandtechers
 
First, yes, they can use the email any way they like. It's theirs, not yours, you were just using it to perform the job while in their employ. Second, trying to take customers with you like that, depending on your business, can be illegal or get you sued, but I don't know your specifics.
 
Why don't you just send an email to your entire address book telling them of your career move and updated contact info?

I'd do this one. Don't specifically tell them to take their business to you at your new job, just let them know of your updated contact information and the pieces will fall where they may.

Just because you don't want them to use that email address doesn't mean they have to or will. Again, your employer can use that email address in any way that they want.
 
It's their email address to use as they want as others have said, but at the same time, they cannot slander you in any way to their/your clients.

I'd bet that in most states (maybe Cali is different, they tend to lean a little more toward the worker) they can do that too.
 
We make a backup PST of your mailbox and 86 your account. Email, Active Directory, all of it.

Why couldn't they? At the time that you sent them, were you an employee of the company? Of course you were and you were using the email address that they made for you on their behalf.

Of course they can keep, read, intercept, etc any and all of your email communications using that email address.

that would be a suprise. while yes they own the account i can't see them being able to send mail under a persons name.
 
They could certainly use that email address (because they own the domain name) but it would be illegal for them to send emails from that address representing themselves as you.
