Do employers want a serious sounding email address when you send them your resume via email? I was gonna make a new one using my real name since I figured that my avatar, which is in my current email address, sounds somewhat silly. Or does this have no bearing whatsoever?

OK, I was thinking about using my first and middle initials, then full last name for the address. Do people use their full names often for an email address?

I'm in recruiting. We generally don't care what your email address is, so long as we can reach you there. Don't use XXXGod@sextrip.com or anything like that, obviously. A lot of people use their hotmal or comcast accounts. We don't care. Even if you have an account through your business, so you have a professional sounding domain, we understand that people don't always want Recruiting contacting them at work. Hotmail is fine to use, and yes, create an account with your name. jsmith@hotmail.com, or JohnSmith@hotmail.com, whatever.

If someone has your firstname, lastname on yahoo or hotmail, I would suggest spending the $10 a year and buying your own domain.
firstname@lastname.com is common too from what I've seen.
get a new email. It's not THAT hard, really. Regardless of whether they mind or not, you make a first impression by resume before you even meet them, and if you are ANYWHERE in the technology field, you won't go too far with a yahoo mail address because employers know that smart people only use free emails for spam.
I suppose it probably also depends on what the job is. If it's flipping burgers, it really wouldn't matter. However, if it's a more "prestigous" job, you'll want an email that matches the quality of the job you're seeking. You only get one chance to make that first impression -- and little things matter in big jobs. And make sure it's an addy you check -- Like HotChic said, if they can't contact you through your listed addy, you might miss out on something big!
You could also get your own domain and host - it's not that expensive. Then reserve the yahoo/hotmail for your spam addys.

we were hiring in my department and we had a applicant who had Ghettobooty69@aol.com ..... hehehe . she didn't get the job by the way but i don't think it was due to her email tho....

I suggest that you get your own domain... You get a professional sounding adress, plus almost no spam.

say your name is John Michael Doe. either JohnD@domain.com or JDoe@domain.com or JMDoe@domain.com would work. my company does it the first way, a rival company does it the second way, and my school did it the third way.
I wish I could have done that but a business already had my last name. I had to go with what you see in my profile. Sometimes I switch over to my other email address which is born@******.***

Yeah, that's what I use, except some company in Spain registered my last name for .com and .net, and someone else had .org... so I just pluralized it, becuase I plan to use it for a "family" web-page somewhere down the line. So instead of being bart@simpson.com, I'd be bart@simpsons.com. Either way, the potential employer will see that you are fairly tech-savvy. If I was interviewing for an IT position, and I saw that the applicant was using Yahoo or Hotmail, I'd probably look at them less positively. For a non-IT position, it wouldn't make as much of a difference.
There was a guy on here who was offering free hosting a while back (I think for e-mail only)... Rossman offers small web-hosting plans for $10 a year. If it's for e-mail only (15 MB disk space, < 100 MB a month transfer), I could host it for free.

Agreed. If I were a recruiter/HR person, impressions are everything.
I see three options (listed in order of best first)
- Register your own domain (firstnamelastname.com e.g. jasonclark.com) with GoDaddy.com or NameCheap.com ... Both these domain registrars should offer FREE E-MAIL FORWARDING/ALIAS. So if e-mail is sent to you@yourdomain.com it's routed to your ISP's e-mail address. This way you only pay for domain registration with no need to worry about web hosting.
- Register a domain with namecheap or godaddy and sign up for cheap web hosting (such as RippleHost or e-rice.net) This way you can have your resume online (in various formats .html .txt .doc and .pdf) in addition to having several e-mail addresses (with webmail access).
- Register a domain with namecheap or godaddy then send a PM to DeviousTrap with your domain, desired username (8 or less characters this will be your default e-mail address), desired password and your real permanent e-mail address. He will be kind enough to host a small web site (with e-mail accounts) for you, free of charge.
