Ok, I have a friend who's motherboard and CPU got fried by a faulty PSU from emachines and he'd like to upgrade the psu motherboard and cpu....The budget right now is $150 or less

CPU - Does not matter we'll look at AMD and Intel recommendations
Motherboard - Needs on board video (but if it has agp/pci-e that would be awesome)
PSU - something better than the POS 200w emachines PSU

Going to be using existing ram (PC3200), Drives

Thanks in advance....parts can come from here or online vendors.

You need to make sure his case can fit a standard ATX motherboard. Most oem boxes won't.

What kind of ram does he have?

That will pretty much limit you to a socket 939 AMD cpu, and motherboard, which should suffice. Not sure about the PSU.

If eMachines is still doing things like they used to - you will require a special sized PSU to fit in the case.

You can probably find them at directron.com - I used to get replacement ones there. Just need to measure the old one and make sure the new one fits.

Some of the newer eMachines (last couple years) have more standard designs and may fit a standard supply.

If you replace the mobo with a similar chipset mobo you most likely will not have to reinstall Windows - just probably update ethernet/audio, etc., drivers . . .

edit: lookee here

The eMachines T3958 includes more technology extras than ever at this price ? including a 16X DVD+/-RW multi-format drive at just $499.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. The DVD+/-RW drive lets consumers easily store digital video and photos onto versatile DVD media. Also, the drive uses new double-layer DVD technology to give PC users up to 8.5GB of data on double-layer DVD media ? that?s twice the space for their digital photos and video. Accessing and storing digital media is made even easier with the system?s 8-in-1 digital media reader and large 80GB hard drive. The new PC also features an Intel Celeron D 340 (2.93 GHz) processor, Intel Extreme Graphics 3D and 512MB of DDR SDRAM, expandable to 2GB.

It was sold through Gateway!

Not sure what your aiming at here!?

This is what I came up with on the Intel side of things:

Setup #1 CPU , motherboard , ram, power supply

1) Intel Celeron D 336 Prescott 2.8GHz 256KB L2 Cache LGA 775 64-Bit Processor - Retail - $45.99 ttl
2) ASROCK 775i65GV - $35 ttl
3) Kingston PC3200 DDR400 1x 512mb - $20 ttl
4) RAIDMAX RX-380K ATX12V 380W Power Supply 100 - 240 V TUV, UL, CSA, CE, FCC, CB - Retail - $19.99 ttl

Total: $120.98 ttl

It's socket 478.

Intel 845GV chipset "Guppy" - Asus OEM board most likely

I replaced one in a dell with a Intel 845g that had AGP - but no IGP
