Ive been looking @ the eMachines M6807 laptop. I really want a laptop, for gaming and such. I know the videocard on this isnt the greatest compared to desktop cards, but compared to other laptops, it seems to be pretty nice. So is this laptop the SHI* or what? Is it gonna run some games pretty good? I was considering getting the voodoo, but the prices are sooo steep. Id' be paying on that thing forever, i think id rather have a new vehicle o_O. The eMachines M6807 seems alot more bang for my buck though, what do you guys think? How does it compare to other laptops, and how far will it go in the gaming scene. Also, i think id buy another stick of ram, will it take 1gb ? i havent looked into it.

So far, every current game I've played on it runs really well. The only problem i'm hitting is with next gen games (FarCry being the most recent). THe 64megs of VRAM does bog it down with the massive amounts of textures in that game and I assume it'll do so for the upcoming games as well (HL2, Doom 3, Painkiller etc.). You COULD get a voodoo pc and probably get better performance on those games, but like you said... you'd have to sell your first born in order to be able to afford that thing whereas you can get the M6807 and pay less than half the price. Personally, I'm quite happy with my investment. Although not the fastest laptop, it's pretty damn fast with the current crop and is hella cheap for what I got. Just think about it this way:

1) you can buy the VoodooPC now and spend the next couple of years using that as your main system, or
2) you can get the M6807 now... save that $1600-1800 you would otherwise have spent on the voodoo, and then you can build an absolutely mind-blowing desktop gaming system a few months down the line and still be under budget :)

But honestly it depends on you. If you want a hardcore gaming notebook NOW that'll play every game pretty fast for at least the next year and you don't mind splurging on it, get the VoodooPC. Otherwise, you can buy the 6807, and save up that hard earned money (especially if you're a college student like me.) Have fun making the decision. Either way, you won't lose.

I think the biggest crap is how video cards arent upgradeable. I mean, alienware is the only company so far that i have seen that advertises being able to upgrade your videocard, overall alienware sounds like a good company, im just not a fan of having an alien head on my laptop, its a turnoff to me. Why cant ALL laptops have the upgrade videocard option. Im sure an athlon 64 3000+ is gonna have the mhz to run the new age game, the ram 512-1gb will be plenty, but it seems that laptops always lack in video. As for desktop system, i got my 2800+ overclocked to 3200+ easy... when the new games come out, ill throw in a new video card and she'll be ready. The only noticeable difference i see in the emachines vs the voodoo IS the video, its a 9600 w/ 64mb vs the 9600 w/ 128 mb. All for a whopping 2k more. Voodoo has some cool stuff, but looking at it, it really looks like they are trying to shaft u. I mean, its like $120 to have it shipped.. insured... ok i worked for ups, u could ship that laptop insured for less than $50 for 4k insurance. Also, the $150 "no dead pixel" thing... we will make sure u dont have a dead pixel.. wow something they should do for free. And the friggin logo!!! oh jeeze, its like $250 to have them put the little voodoo logo on your pc. If it wasnt for all the obvious ripoffs, and the option to upgrade my video card, i would probably get a voodoo. *sighs* i just want a laptop that can play halflife2 and doom3 when it comes out. Mhz wise, it should be there. Video cards just need to be easier to change out :( Laptops would PWN even more.

You can go to Hypersonic and get the same laptop for about 3K (the AX6 , about 3K with 1 meg RAM, XP Pro, 7200 RPM HD & 3200 & a great dead pixel policy & a 3 year warranty) or to ibuypower and get the same thing for about 2K but they restrict you to a 1 year warranty.

In any case, the 6807 is a great deal.

You COULD get a Voodoo and pay an extra 2000 dollars, where you could have gotten the friggin EXACT machine for 2000 less somewhere else.
