I was just at Best Buy yesterday and noticed they have the $250 rebates on the following models:
Two rebates - $100 eMachines, $150 Best Buy. The Best Buy rebate appears to be in-store only, so no linky. Expires 3/6/2004.

I bought the M6805 and so far am impressed. I also picked up a RewardZone, which costed $10 but gives you something like $5 back on every $125 you spend. As a result, I should get roughly $70 back in gift cards by mail for the cost of the laptop + service plan.

both are great deals -- emachines have had probelms with dead pixels recently -- so thoroughly inspect them if you do get one....

my GF is looking for a laptop, the 6505 seems great deal, but its 7.5 lbs. how much difference does that make in the real world, she'll be carrying it to school on occasions.

zaku:

Don't forget the extra size because of the widescreen. Weight and size are enemies to portability.

If you need the extra screen space and power, I think its good compromise. You'll get about 2.5-3 hrs on battery. It just barely fits in my bookbag and is no worse than carrying around a big text book or 2.

But if portability is key, you may need to look elsewhere (ie IBM X40 1/2 the weight and more twice the battery life).

yea the IBMs were recommended to me in another thread, but they are too expensive for the processor/memory/storage included. my GF is considering the Dell 600M as it weights around 5lbs or so and it seem like good value for her money. we're waiting for some dell coupons before purchasing. But this emachine 6805 has so much in it with the A64, radeon, 512 of ram as well as a large HD. the only drawback is the 7.5lb and 8.65lb of 'total travel weight'

the M5309 might be a good compromise, saves a pound and a few hundred by going with a 2500+xp and shared video. how are the M5309s?

go with the 5312 - it has built in wireless and firewire. the 5309 has neither-- and it's less $ than the 5309!! :)

This deal is back at Best Buy, but better now because the price is $1,549 with $250 in rebates, so there are $100 fewer dollars to wait for.

I just wish this computer had the 9700 or 9600 128MB chip. Is it fair to assume that the chip is not removable?

There's a $100 MIR and a $150 giftcard/"digital dollars" offer. Not quite $250 back in your pocket, but it's not so shabby. I'm going to pick one of these babies up today, since the DD offer is only good through tonight.

I'm very pleased with my M6807 (same as the 6805 but with DVD burner). No dead pixels here, though I do recomend trying out IN the store. You have to pay for the computer first, but this way if there's a problem it can be taken care of in real-time.

On the subject of weight, yes it is heavy! When I use my friends Dell Latitude D600 I'm blow away. Compared to mine it's so light. If your thinking about this machine consider it a 'desktop replacement', a class of laptops that are not really ment to be carried around much.

I love this eMachine (sounds crazy) but if I where in school I would spend more to get less horsepower and MUCH lighter weight.
