My brother had purchased "emachine" this summer and just told me it won't start. emachine came with boot cd but after inserting boot disk all he gets is 'A:\' and can't recognize 'C:'.

I figure it is HDD problem. The options with boot disk asked to format HDD and restore Windows and not format and restore Windows. Nothing works, can the HDD be saved? There's no warrenty on emachine.

If he buys a new HDD, how do you install it. Does he only need Windows cd to get it going? Any modification to the BIOS? Does it matter with ATA100 or 66? I'm thinking he should buy IBM 75GXP.

I don't think he's able to play with partion and stuff. He's very far away from me that I can't get my hands on it. Can someone help on this. I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

The restore CD works by itself. You don't need a boot disk. Where did he get a boot disk and how was it made?

Have him try the emachines restore CD again and tell him to pick the option of installing windows without formating. That way he won't lose data on the drive.
