is this computer worth buying, even at such a low price? Will the celeron processor perform adequately?

For me, these eMachines have been hard to beat. I've got one with a 333 Celeron (model 333k) with 128Meg and one with a 400 Celeron (model 400id) with 192Meg. I bought these back when eMachines first were stocked at BestBuy. Wish I had never purchased the extended maintenence plan. Both PCs and monitors are still chugging away.

I use them for a lot of software testing, and am constantly rebuilding them. One has Server 2003 on it with Symantec AV Corporate Edition as an AV server. The other has Server 2003 with the SonicWall SGMS on it. Two weeks ago one had Win2K Server with RealSecure SiteProtector (and SQL Server SP3). Can't kill them. Granted, these are not server class by any imagination, but work great for testing. Before I got in on the Dell 8250 deal, they were used by my wife and I as personal PCs. Now the 8250 is the family PC and the eMachines are mulit-boot.

I'd almost buy this current deal, but how many PCs does anyone need?

Emachines are great machines. Purchased the 300mhz about 3-4 years back. With a couple upgrades here and there it got me through my freshmen year of college. Was able to use aim, winamp, word, and the internet perfectly. Pretty good for a $400 computer.
Are there any other computers in the $300 range you guys would recommend over this?

I got emachines too and was very satisfied with them. There is much (aftermarket) support through usergroups etc.

I flashed my 333MHz and 400MHz emachines (after the warranty was over) with a new BIOS and got rid of the limitations from emachine's BIOS.

For this price it is an unbeatable deal.

Great find!

Looks like we have the same old eMachines!

Which site do you consider best for info on upgrading eMachine BIOS? The motherboards of my older eMachines seem limited in their current state. They have trouble with newer CDRW drives and even some older ones. RAM upgrade also seems limited.

Thanks in advance!

Hm.. I was planning on doing something similar with an old MyFavorite PC I got way back when, but I had to search the motherboard for identifying marks, and then found out the regular BIOS had 2 board revisions, of which I couldn't tell which one I had. If that is the case with this, I am not that sure about how to identify the exact board type aside from cracking the case and looking for a serial number of somekind.

luv2save, thanks for this deal, I just got it for a friend.....

this is where I got my BIOS from:
http://www.e4all.info/
Also most other yahoo groups are listed there.

there are several other emachine groups on yahoo:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/emachineupgraders/

and just in case...
http://www.priorityonesupport.com/downloads/emachines/

But the best place is definately
http://www.e4all.info

He did a great job accumulating all the info there.
Thank him for his work with some lines or paypal him some bucks (I gave him 10).

As I said in an earlier thread I customized this machine for my son. My warning is that Emachines is using a non standard cd drive that sticks out farther than a normal drive. So when I replaced their drives with a standard dvd drive and a standard cd burner, they were inset into the case and there is some open space that would let dust into the case.

My son didn't care and we will clean it our periodically but in case you all do...fair warning.

Thanks for the info. If I can get a couple more years out of these, it will be worth at least 10 bucks!

Need to resist this deal though!

ahhh.......wtf. I put it in my cart last night and tried to place the order when it showed as $299. The site was closed between the hours of 4:00-7:00 eastern so I had to wait. Now my shopping cart is showing as $50 more! Is there anyway I can still get it for $299? (i.e..calling the store)

nevermind..called the store..seems they still have it as $299. Just gonna get the difference when I go to pick it up.

just picked it up.....monitor is sweet and the computer runs like a charm. Pretty quiet for an emachine. Printer's cartridges run for about $7.99 b&w which is awesome. Gonna install dvd rom and cd-r, along with 128 more ram. All together I'm probably going to spend less than $400 for this puppy; Very Very Hot.
