I always felt white "privilege" wasn't a very good term to use. White "advantage" is far more accurate, especially when thinking about lower income people. Poor people, irrespective of their race, are never "privileged", while some may have a slight "advantage" over others.I think the points Maher has been making about so-called "wokeness" are being trivialized and/or mischaracterized here. In the real world, you aren't either someone who agrees with every idea of CRT or every slogan of activists, or else you're a racist.
Maher has some valid points about the damage that certain ideas on the far left are doing to the democrats politically. He sees the creeping facsim on the right, and he wants the left to improve its messaging. For example, the use of the phrase "white privilege." In the old days, when we discussed racism, it was to point out the black people were disadvantaged. Now it's to say that white people are privileged. It's two different ways of looking at the same thing. But one way focuses attention on the victim to garner sympathy, while the other just pisses off poor and working class white people who don't feel in the least bit "privileged." It's bad politics.
My main issue with Maher was the anti-vax crap. I have no idea why he took that turn.
I suppose like many others, the word 'privilege' has worn out it's welcome in some ways. Poor whites/bottom middle class people sure don't feel privileged, and that is yet another bit that stokes that MAGA anger. That said, white males professionals have a rather large advantage over women and minorities; so not slight at all.I always felt white "privilege" wasn't a very good term to use. White "advantage" is far more accurate, especially when thinking about lower income people. Poor people, irrespective of their race, are never "privileged", while some may have a slight "advantage" over others.
Try encountering a police officer as a poor black man vs a poor white man or woman and see what happens.I always felt white "privilege" wasn't a very good term to use. White "advantage" is far more accurate, especially when thinking about lower income people. Poor people, irrespective of their race, are never "privileged", while some may have a slight "advantage" over others.
What's the functional difference between the two words in this situation?I always felt white "privilege" wasn't a very good term to use. White "advantage" is far more accurate, especially when thinking about lower income people. Poor people, irrespective of their race, are never "privileged", while some may have a slight "advantage" over others.
advantage
1 : superiority of position or condition
Higher ground gave the enemy the advantage.
2 : a factor or circumstance of benefit to its possessor
lacked the advantages of an education
privilege
: a right or immunity granted as a peculiar benefit, advantage, or favor : prerogative
especially : such a right or immunity attached specifically to a position or an office
Heard Maher was gargling Elon's ballsack on his show Friday. Funny to see Maher fans shocked as if that isn't who he has always been.
Yeah - the solar install and then COVID pushed him over the edge he tip-toed on for years. Something snapped. It’s not who he’s always been. It’s who he’s transformed into as he goes deeper down the social media rabbit hole. Watching him is like watching someone in real time become radicalized/indoctrinated. If I had to pin point when his transformation started I would say it happened during his solar install drama and then Covid. So we have a victim coupled with stress along with deep social media interaction.

I largely agree with all of this. He’s not particularly funny but I enjoy his discussions.I watch almost all of Maher's shows. I absolutely loathe him as a human being, he's beyond unfunny (fast forward through the monologue), but he does have great guests on and often will have good discussions. I agree with him on some talking points (he was right and I totally agreed with him about Trump not boing quietly, I agree with him on health care and lack of nutrition in America's diet etc.). I haven't watched this week's episode yet, but I feel once again I will want to reach through and punch him in the face.
wait - who is "him"? Musk or Maher? Or "yes"?I largely agree with all of this. He’s not particularly funny but I enjoy his discussions.
I also agree that after the interview with Musk you will want to punch him in the face.
Painfully unfunny.Yeah - the solar install and then COVID pushed him over the edge he tip-toed on for years. Something snapped.
Can I mention again how supremely unfunny he is? My God, he is unfunny.
Exactly. If it was originally labeled advantage instead of privilege, you would see white people saying how they aren't advantaged in life. What's the functional difference between the two words in this situation?
Hmm, not showing up for me.

Nothing says stability and "please come advertise on my platform" like showing you're a petty little drama person prone to taking arbitrary actions that could potentially damage those advertisers' brands.
