Unless the victims were in some ancient econobox, that story doesn't make a ton of sense. I'm sure it happened but the details would be interesting.
The porky Model X notwithstanding, IMHO Tesla cars actually don't weigh
too much more than their closest ICE competitors. Many other popular BEVs (at least in the West) weigh substantially more, and that partially explains Tesla's drivetrain efficiency. As A/// mentioned, we need more energy-dense battery tech before this problem is solved.
In news from a month ago, the NTSB figured out how a "driver-less" Tesla killed its two victims. Apparently at nearly 60 mph, the seat belt didn't quite do its job?
The agency said security video from the driver's home showed the driver and passenger getting into the front seats before driving away from the home.
