My cousin goes from Rochester to Northern NJ and Philly with his Tesla regularly.
As long as you’re in areas with charging stations and have the time to waste waiting for the car to charge, I guess they’re great, if I never wanted to leave town by car I’d buy one but at this point I still love to travel by car.

As progressive as I am, I am gonna get the the next last diesel, probably Skoda something. Charging opportunities is just not viable yet in the subs.
Where do you live? I live in a northern suburb of OKC, basically were nearly all the new oil money lives, more than half the people I know work oil. And we have multiple charging locations around town. Plus, all the single family homes, of course.

EVs are great to have if you don’t prefer to travel by car out of your city. They’re not yet practical for long trips.
People should stop buying cars for to get 100% coverage of all possible scenarios. This is why we have so many damned trucks on the roads, so people can haul mulch once a year or maybe tow a boat in the future.

The newer EVs won't be terrible on road trips, but even if they are, you can rent a car. The cost of renting a car once or two a year is likely less than the savings in fuel from using an EV the rest of time. Plus you put all the depreciating miles on someone else's vehicle. Or most families have two cars, its easy to have one EV and one ICE.

Of course there are some people that road trip a lot and only have one car, so for that niche of people hybrid is probably best for now.

I'm shopping for a hybrid right now. Not enough charging infrastructure in these urban parts yet. But a Prius will be perfect

Scandinavia… Im a prick, I am gonna need at home charging options before I consider an EV plus for work I drive a bit, and the charging options is not quite there for longer distances.

There is one thing wrong about this sort of article. When driving an EV long distance, you need to change your mindset. It is not about getting there faster, it is about getting their comfortably. Plan your charging stops around logical breaks and in areas that have some amenities. Plan to have a snack/lunch or stretch your legs, throw a frisbee or toss a ball with your kid. Tesla charging infrastructure makes this work, the others make the stops a bit too long IMO.

If you just want to get someplace ASAP, gas is going to be king for the foreseeable future.

Oh yeah, I forgot you lived over there. I would never get an EV without home charging being an option.

The Prius Prime would probably be a great option too. I just realized yesterday it is only about a 2K upgrade to the regular Prius.

Interesting. A new prius was going to be tight but maybe doable.

But used cars are stupid pricey now.

Turns out the prius prime qualifies for like 4.5K of the 7.5k EV tax credit because of its battery size and plug in ability. 25 miles just on battery no gas. That would cover themajority of my driving.

I meant to look up the EV credit last night, but forgot to. Thanks for doing that work for me ;). I assume it'd have no problem being charged on 120V too.

From what I remember 5.5 hours to a full charge on 120, just over 2 if you beef it up.

ALso started looking at the Hybrid Elantra. Only 25K for what I would get, Blue trim with a few add ons. Over 5K cheaper than the Prius Prime.

I'll have to look at that. Going to go to the car show in Dallas in a couple weeks. Hoping they have more hybrids there than they had in OKC. Before you get too set on a Hyundai or Kia definitely see if you can actually get one for MSRP, I've heard they have been the worst about huge dealer mark ups.

One thing that is nice about Tesla is no dealership bullshit, just let me order a car the way I want it and pay the sticker price when it shows up in a couple of months.

Thanks for the heads up. I actually did find just one Elantra Hybrid in the color and trim I want. It's only marked up like 500 bucks thankfully.

I want more cargo space like a Prius but I kind of do want the peppier powertrain of the Elantra - that is kind of a big deal, and still getting 54 highway mpg. The Prius LE AWD is tempting too. EIther way I'd have to get a roof rack so at the end of the day.

The Prime is so enticing because of those 25 miles. That would cover my Mon-Fri driving - on the weekends I'd finally have to fire up the gas engine lol

Does it qualify? The tax credits have changed significantly for 2023. I think they now only apply if the car is manufactured in the USA, which the Prius isn't.

The source I found yesterday, Edmunds, has a list and the prius prime is definitely on it. Unless they are wrong. Also it was mentioned in a couple reviews on the Prius Prime, including one on JDPower I think. I read a few.

My link is the official IRS list from the government.

Edmunds may have failed to purge old info from their list when they updated, as that was the value of Credit Toyota received in early 2022.

The Edmunds link points here to this other official list as their source:

If you check that, the Toyotas are gone now.

The new rules are fairly clear now. If not assembled in North America, there is no federal credit:

The Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is not eligible for a federal tax credit, as its final assembly doesn’t take place in North America

On August 16, 2022, the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act meant that more electric and hybrid vehicles would be once again eligible for a federal tax credit. While this is good news overall, new eligibility requirements mean that a lot of vehicles no longer meet the criteria for the tax credit—and one of those vehicles is the Toyota Prius Prime.

Well, all links to twitter are broken right now along with a whole host of other issues.

Links end up with this:

Thats ok, Elon is opining on how it's unfair to let trans athletes compete so it's basically a wash if you think about it. Just another day combatting the woke mind virus while the service he sunk much of his fortune into continues to crumble.

I think they tried to kill Tweet Deck access for non-subscribers but likely broke a whole bunch of stuff at the same time. Good thing there are plenty of engineers left who know how everything works!

Looks like that is the table of "qualified for previous tax credits."

My bad. Looks like I will try to grab one of the only silver Elantra Hybrids anywhere near me in stock if these dealer doesn't fuck with the msrp much when they call me back.

I know you know a thing or two about roof racks. I would have to get a roof rack for the Elantra if I get it. What would you recommend as one of the better roof rack rail systems that can be more aerodynamic that doesn't break the bank?

My experience with a recent Elantra HEV purchase: had to put a deposit down with a dealer that guaranteed selling at MSRP to await an allocation and avoid other dealership shenanigans. At the time, most of the incoming stock was already reserved before it hit the lots. The silver (what they called "fluid metal") is definitely a great color - it's what my wife and I got.

If I did have to install a roof rack, I'd probably look at one of the standard companies, partly for quality reasons and partly for fit: the last thing I'd want is some cheap rack coming off on the highway. But I'd also consider something easily removable if I didn't need it all the time, just to help with fuel economy on the highway.

All the rack systems break the bank. I have no idea how they keep their prices so high without getting a new competitor.

Been a while since I've really looking into them, but I'd start with Thule and Yakima. Both have aero bars and I think both can use each others accessories. So you can get the bars you like and still buy the accessory you like from a different company. If it something you'll only need once in a while, I'd look for the system that is the easiest/quickest to install. Even with the aerobars, I wouldn't leave them on if you aren't using them for awhile, they'll probably have a pretty noticeable impact on the fuel mileage. My round bars knock off ~10%, but I'd expect that to be worse on a Hybrid that is more aerodynamic to start.
