The two terms were interchangeable until recently. The only reason it's been redefined is so that people can advertise their sexual proclivities. It's almost become a badge of honor to advertise one's sexual preferences and force others to acknowledge them by demanding the use of made up pronouns. Those same pronouns are also a method of asserting dominance in a first meeting situation by "correcting" the other person even though you've been greeted respectfully.

Let the flames begin!
1) While it’s true that lots of people used sex and gender incorrectly as interchangeable until recently the definitions have ALWAYS been different. That’s why they are two different words, after all. You learning the actual, long-standing definition of a word is not it being redefined, it’s you learning something. Ironically you are the one attempting to redefine a word here.

2) Gender pronouns are not about sexual preference.

3) I have never once had someone attempt to force me to do anything in regards to their gender pronouns and I bet you haven’t either, and I work in a place that is VERY excited to embrace that sort of thing. This is Fox News talking.

4) In The Princess Bride Fezzik didn’t redefine the word inconceivable, he just informed Vizzini he was using it wrong.

I read an article yesterday about the very noticeable increase in employee departures from Twitter, with a huge chunk of them going to Google and Facebook. And startups too. And this is a lot of their top talent who are very desirable. These companies aren't recruiting or hiring peons

I mean, if we still believe in big-brained-4D-chess-playing Elon Musk, that’s one way to sink Twitter—ensure that top talent leaves to join or start new competitors.

An ad spending pullback as being seen at Google and now FB could not possibly come at a worse time for Musk.

Part of that is just recession planning. It’s budget season. The latest round of global rate hikes is enough to pull us down into recession territory—and central banks are saying they’re probably still not done raising rates. Fortune 500s have already seen double the usual amount of CFO turnover as companies look for finance chiefs with cost cutting and thrifty cash management chops. And the first thing to get slashed is usually marketing/advertising commits for next fiscal year (even before labor).

I don't recall them ever being 'interchangeable'. My recollection is 'gender' traditionally related to language, it was a grammatical concept - then it got repurposed to relate to sex-roles or clothing etc, to distinguish that from biological sex.

As an aside, what I don't entirely understand is why 'trans-gender' is sometimes used to describe situations involving the biological alteration of the body. Why is that not 'trans-sex'? 'Trans-gender' should surely just involve modes of dress or behaviour, not physical changes to the body?

I do think that it's very clear nobody really understand any of this stuff as much as they pretend to. Science itself seems to have very little understanding of the relation between brain and mind, the material world and subjective experiences, and that seems pretty central to the question of sex vs gender.

This thread reminded me to deactivate my long dormant unused twitter account.
I would have to remember my password. When twitter first became a thing, our company used it to send after-hours alerts. That got dropped after a few months. I used it to track UP steam engines when they were passing through but that's it. I still get occasional spam from twitter so at least I know which email address I gave them.

When you've overpaying massively for a company who's major revenue stream is about to shrink its not good whatever the reason. They're probably getting dinged by Apple's new ad rules for the App Store too. None of this is good news when you already have a likely operating loss in the hundreds of millions and a fresh 1B per year debt service you have to worry about blowing the covenants on.

His plans are to repurpose it and morph it into wechat copy.
A wechat copy where he is in complete control.

You can't have a successful payments app when you block shitheads, dumbasses and misinformed nutjobs.

No thanks. I'm out

It’s something alright.

We have to start a Red Squirrel twatter greatest hits thread. I mean holy shit. Just proof how mainstreamed utter batshit has become.

@Red Squirrel You may want to look here to see the end result of the COVID misinformation you're falling for with ZERO critical thought whatsoever.

Thousands upon thousands of verifiable anti-vax nutter people just like you. Dead or crippled by COVID.

I’ve never encountered this and I live near you, so exactly where are you hanging out where you are exposed to such things? In fact the only time I even hear about pronouns is when it’s from a right wing source.

I deleted my alt but still keeping my main for now. No more links though, screenshots only.

Based on my feed I would not have a hard time believing a lot to people I follow have already deactivated.

Why am I not surprised you're an anti-vax idiot who spreads COVID misinformation?

Your Twitter reads like an election denying Qanon qult member page. Holy fucking shit on a shingle.

(Hints: blood NATURALLY clots in cadavers and surgical masks protect others from you, not you from others)

Are you seriously this fucking stupid? What next? Flat earth?
I really wish everyone would leave the flat earthers alone. Those fellows have put real effort and thought into their brand of c

Gender: Either of the two divisions, designated female and male, by which most organisms are classified on the basis of their reproductive organs and functions; sex.
This is the definition I learned in grade school. It's the usage that was common on forms that required one to declare their sex.

If gender pronouns aren't about sexual preference, why are we bothering with them? Should I decide that my pronoun is "His Majesty" and expect that it be used by others?
Sir and mam are respectful methods of addressing someone. What makes any of the half dozen other pronouns better? What's the point other than displaying nonconformity? I don't need anyone to announce that they're special. I treat everyone I meet with respect.
This is a change without basis, an unneeded alteration of language that only exists as a declaration of personal standing, or what clan you align with.

If you refuse to accept the basic concepts and definitions that have been around since the 20th century, that's your right.
The question is why is this important to you that you need to push back?

Why should you care if people treat gender as a social construct on expected behaviors and treat sex as a biological fact that encompasses a spectrum of physical characteristics.
