I have to congratulate Elon on what is probably going to be the 2nd worst silicon valley deal behind the AOL-Time Warner merger.

Waiting to see what service figures out how to strip mine the valuable (to advertisers) posters and audience that still inhabited Twitter and just leaves him with a very expensive version of Parler.

I'm excited for the show. I just deactivated my Twitter account. It's so funny to see Elon try to back out of a deal and then getting so owned legally he's forced to buy it to not look as stupid as he is in court , and begging advertisers not to leave. His fucking cult members and Maga love this shit and say he's a winner.

Such a shit show of a group of people but can't wait for him to lose all that money.

He should hire green man as CFO the guy who doesn't know the difference between gross profit and net profit.

Yay, deleted Twitter account. Will still watch the shit show for a bit from the sidelines, but expecting to have to add Twitter to blocked sites as expect Elon to fire all the staff that are working to moderate/review content, and opens it up to become the freedom-loving MAGA NAZI Terrorist Pedo platform that he always wanted it to be.

I haven't deleted yet but will probably spend more time on other platforms like Reddit. Something will come along to replace what I find valuable about Twitter sooner or later...

One thing for sure, it's going to get a lot more interesting.

Wait and see is the way to go here.
I just hope the spread of misinformation can be combated.

Been too busy to follow the news, is it a done deal? Sounds like it from everyone's posts.

First thing Elon will do is reinstate our newest neo Nazi maga member, Kanye. And our older neo Nazi, Trump

Just read a blurb saying Musk took it over today and fired the top 3 people. This from a site I would call "less than reliable".

Edit: Looks like it's real. This is going to be an endlessly amusing shit storm.

Elon takes over just in time to open the floodgates of Right Wing disinformation before the Midterms.

Now if everyone could just stop supporting Elon by posting Twitter links here. If important, maybe a screen cap of the tweet, so no more hits...

well, there goes the war in Ukraine! (but yeah, screen caps would be an improvement for the niche folks like myself, because I could only access like 60% of Twitter info anyway this year)

Not really, very few voters nowadays decide in the final 2 weeks.

Also, I doubt a few hundred extra hits from ATOT forum viewers has any meaningful impact on Twitter's business. Most of us probably run ad blockers, or view tweets anonymously anyway. As some have mentioned earlier in this thread, Twitter is a good way to get breaking news from your desired sources. I'm not referring to misinformation, but rather curated professional news tweets. Even if much of Twitter degrades into a worse cesspool, that won't affect those who try to use the service rationally unless Elon drastically changes the algos. At this point, I'm not sure if there is any ready-made alternative that progressive ATOTers will migrate to. :p

My wife and I both just deleted our Twitter accounts. My last and only remaining social media platform. Bye bye!

What Musk wants from this is a platform where the rules of engagement favor him posting as he pleases with no consequences, with stronger consequences for his critics. The removal of moderation guidelines is the obvious overt goal. The less obvious thing will be the addition of stronger real-name requirements to reduce engagement from anonymous people.

When Musk rails about “bots”, he doesn’t care about automated activity. What bothers him is anonymous critics of people in power (such as himself). He hates that anonymous people can roast his dumb ass tweets without being exposed to harassment, so he conflates these people with “bots” and aims to get rid of them. His approach to doing this will be to force people to share more identifying information so they can be exposed to harassment. This shifts the power balance in his favor, since average people don’t command the same resources to defend themselves from stalking, harassment, vexatious litigation, etc.

Musk is pursuing a financially ruinous deal because he’s a terminally online billionaire who rationalizes lighting cash on fire so that he can continue to feel like the smartest guy in the room. He is absolutely petty & narcissistic enough to do that. It remains to be seen whether he’s actually rich enough.
