I have a hp elitebook 2730p that I bought used, the system powered on and posted. There was no hdd drive included, so I bought a refurbished 64GB wintec msata ssd. the issue I am having is that the laptop does not seem to recognize the ssd. When I hooked the ssd up to my desktop with a msata adapter the ssd was recognized. my question is does anyone know of any special settings I need to use to get the laptop to see the ssd or is the motherboard bad? I haven't been able to find any info on google to suggest I need any special settings, but maybe someone knows for sure.

Have you tried flashing the bios to the latest version? HP usuall provides multiple methods to update.

Have gone into the BIOS to see if it sees the HD at the BIOS level? That might be a start before flashing.

I haven't tried a bios update yet.

There is nothing in the bios labeled hard drive. the boot order doesn't specify devices it just list types of devices.

I'm having the same problem with the same refurbished 64GB wintec msata SSD?? I have updated the bios to the latest version. In the bios when I go to the system diagnostics and run the hard drive test, it says "failed, disk not installed". But the SSD works when I plug it up to another computer with a USB adapter?? Any suggestions on why this is happening on a HP Elitebook 2730p??

I tried updating the bios, but it still doesn't see the ssd. I ordered a replacement motherboard from ebay because it is cheaper than buying a different msata drive.

I got the replacement board in and it also does not recognize the ssd. there must be some kind of incompatibility with this laptop and this ssd.

Is it possible that's not a mSATA port?

The Elitebook 2170p has a WWAN slot that is physically similar to an mSATA slot, but isn't one.

just to clarify I am talking about micro sata (regular sata connector with a notch) not mini sata (which looks like mini pci-e).

I had a 2530p which was compatible with one Samsung SSD on eBay but not another. Unfortunately I don't have the model numbers anymore.

I don't know exactly how close those two models are but judging by other Elitebook model numbers, probably very close.

I am buying another micro sata cable for this, before I break down and buy a regular hard drive.

I got a toshiba ssd from a lenovo and it works fine. So I think it is safe to say that the wintec just doesn't work with this laptop.

HP's probook and elite book lines are ROM locked to sata and wwan wlan cards with an hp ROM on them. You have to buy hp branded stuff. On their pavilion / envy lines that have msata you can use whatever you want.

No.

I personally ran a Dell branded Samsung SSD in a 2530p.

I upgraded to SAMSUNG MMCRE28G8MXP-0VBL1 (pulled from a Lenovo) a few months ago it is working fine. Make sure that you're using the latest BIOS: Hewlett-Packard 68POU Ver. F.20 dated 12/ 08/ 2011
Bear in mind that there is a difference between an mSata and micro-Sata (uSata). Micro-Sata is what the 1.8" hard drive uses and the mSata slot is for WWAN.

hmm interesting. i just ordered a probook 430 which has a NGFF ssd slot and i read online that they couldn't get SSDs working in this generation. maybe ill have to get one.

i also have a probook 4530s and i did buy a lenovo wifi card at one pointm, which the HP complained about because it was ROM locked to only HP wlan cards so i expected the same from the msata slot.
