Just bought a new computer:

Elite K7S5A Motherboard
The board uses the SiS 735 chipset which supports 4 x AGP and UDMA 33/66/100.
256Mb DDR SDRAM
40Gb UDMA 100 Hard Drive, 3.5" Floppy Drive,
52 Speed CD Rom,
64Mb MX 200 graphics card,
V 90 modem,
2 USB Ports and Onboard sound.
This is housed in a Midi Tower ATX case with 300 watt PSU.
WINDOWS 98SE

When it arrived I turned it on and received the following message:

While Initializing device CONFIGMG
Windows Protection Error
You need to restart your computer

I restarted and all was fine. However, the 3rd time I booted I got the same error message. Tried a further 3 times and booted fine. Anyone else had similar problems? I am suspecting the motherboard/ BIOS/ etc but not sure...

I found a MS knowledge base article after a Google search. It looks somewhat relevant, but it might give you a few things to try...

I once had similar problems with Windows 98 on boot, and it turned out to be an incompatibility between a Seagate hard drive and an Ali IDE controller. Very strange. I replaced the hard drive, reinstalled, and everything was fine.

Just in case, you might try downloading Memtest86 onto a floppy to verify that your RAM is functioning properly.

Thanks for the URL but the MS KB article is related to a different motherboard.

I have found some interesting answers in the following link and suggest anyone experiencing similar problems to take a look...
