elimate echo with comp mic and speakers?

I don't know if this is a solvable problem...eliminating audio echo while using a microphone and speakers on a computer. You ever heard it, like when playing a video game with voice chat? The mic picks up the sound from the speakers and echos it through the speakers. Sometimes it doesn't matter, like when chatting with someone, but it games you always have sound effects going off and you get the echo no matter what. I have a 5.1 system (Logitech z-640s), so the speakers are all over the place. Is there any solution to this problem, or should I just keep using my headphones along with the mic?

Mute mic-in. Then you won't hear the echo, but the mic should still work.
