I have the game, and it is indeed patched enough to be fun now. While it is still somewhat unstable (I still get crashes late game), it isn't as unstable as Fallout 3 and I was able to play that for quite a while. The gameplay is now actually pretty good, IMO, and is a far better 4x game than Civilization 5 at least.

At the same time, it is not my favorite game by a long shot. It is just the best recent 4X game I have at the moment. The Genre is pretty scarce though, so just being relatively fun and somewhat stable is good enough to play it for me.

I'm was tempted to jump on this. I read all the negative stuff about this game, but I really want it to be (get?) good, just to have something different. Maybe some day.. But I think I'll pass for now. Realized I should just go play some more Civ4 and wait on both Elemental and civ5.

If I really enjoyed Galactic Civilizations and Sins of a Solar Empire will I enjoy this?

How long ago did you read the negative stuff? The game was in dire straights upon release, but the first patch fixed a lot of things. After that there's been a pretty steady stream of patches.

all the problems were at release. it is much, much better now. HOnestly, I haven't played it much since the major update, but it's still quite good.

the guy who did Fall of Heaven (the big, popular, fantasy-based mod for Civ 4) took over as lead designer, and his campaign mode is supposed to be released in a few months, I think.

I assume it doesn't matter what you pay now--but I do know that anyone who purchases it before that, will get that for free, as well as the first major expansion which is due in the winter *I think*

It's a shame, the game was rushed out way early and horribly buggy and clunky. Actually, it seems a lot harder now. I've tried to start a few games with the new overhaul and I keep getting owned early on, haha. I have to figure out the new mechanics.

I would say, yes--but a better comparison would be something like Civ with light role play elements. (upgrades for your main character/adventurer, and other heroes.)

Actually, those are the only games i have on Impulse, heh. I still haven't been able to get into GC II, but finally, after a year and several attempts; I ma now playing the hell out of Sins. I used to get my ass kicked in that and now have a handle on it. It was the opposite with Elemental, but now I can't get anywhere in that one.

but it is turn-based like GC; unlike Sins.

Elemental is probably about half way between Civilization and Galactic Civilization 2. It doesn't have the total freedom and customization you have with Gal Civ 2, but it has far more customization than you get in the Civilization series. It has tactical combat as well, and the ability to customize your troops (simliar to GC2, but without the rock/paper/scissors mechanic GC2 had for damage/defense). The game kind of reminds me of MoO2, and probably is very similar to Master of Magic, but I have never played that game so I can't tell.

All the major bugs and gameplay issues have been worked out. It still has some memory problems late game (I crash pretty often around turn 300) but it is very playable, and I think it is pretty fun.
