For desktops, I only buy Samsung due to their price, speed and reliability. Unless I'm in a bind and need something quick, I'll go with Hitachi. Can't wait to see how they preform too.

Samsung has found a way to build 1TB platters for hard drives, which will allow it to build 4TB hard drives for computers. The news came from CeBIT courtesy of German newspaper Heise and indicates a new record. Currently, companies can only produce 3TB 3.5-inch hard drives, with each platter at 750MB. The breakthrough also applies to notebooks, as Samsung showed off a 2.5-inch, two-platter, 1TB drive that is compatible with most average notebooks thanks to its standard height.

When the 4TB HDDs will begin shipping wasn't revealed, but when they do, they will be part of the company's Spinpoint EcoGreen series. As such, they will have 5,400RPM rotational speeds, have 32MB of cache and a SATA 6Gbps interface. Samsung added that the technology would also allow for 10TB drives with some more modification, though this wouldn't happen for a while yet.

The arrival of 4TB drives would lower the prices of 3TB drives, with some already or soon available from Hitachi, Seagate and WD. [via MaximumPC]

Why only 4Tb? 5 platters can be fit into the 3.5" 1" packages.

Except that Samsung only puts 3 platters per drive max, so it will be 3TB max. Still good news, I was afraid magnetic storage development was slowing down, glad to see that's not the case, need cheap space for all the media.
