Those that seek out cars that are safe, will know about and understand electronic stability control....and be willing to pay for such a technology. The low demand doesn't seem to be related to awareness, but rather cost-benefit analysis. For the price premiuim (often significant when bundled with other options)...it seems unnecessary for most customers to have.

In addition, since customers can't really tell the differences between vehicles with or without electronic stability control unless performing extreme maneuvers, any perceived benefit is minimal at the point of purchase. Such was the obstacles air bags had upon introduction, not to mention high manufacturing and replacement costs. Unless the NHTSA mandates this techonology, this doesn't seem to be a technology that will catch on in mainstream vehicles, unless its costs came down considerably.

I wasn't even sure what they meant by electronic stability control until they started talking about braking. I thought that was called traction control.
