For the iphones that come with an electronic home button (I forget if this started with the 6s or the 7), can you have your finger on the button and not have it activate until you press down, similar to the mechanical button? I do this all the time on my iphone 6 but my home button is no longer working and I don't know if I can live with all the usability drawbacks of the later versions.
 
Yes, on the 7/+, and 8/+ with the solid state button, until you actually 'press' it, it won't act as a button. I think if you double-tap (not 'click') it, it will do some sort of accessibility thing, but you can turn that off.
