I need something to tell me the level of a large lead acid battery.

you can do that by measuring the voltage right? ok, so how do I measure the voltage?

With a VOLT meter, you can get them starting at $5. A fully charged battery should read around 12.6 Vdc.

The problem is you were not very explicit.

If you need a car battery checked to see if it is good you really need to do a load test. For that, take it to Autozone etc, where they will do a free test to check its condition.

what do you mean by "level"?

to check the water level pop open a cap and take a peek inside.
if your talking about the charge use a hydrometer

you wern't very specificabout the type of battery so i'm assuming you mean a conventional car battery.

it's for an electric vehicle project

it will likely be running off a series of several lead-acid batteries
