I'm a huge fan of the original VW Bus. Man, 5 years is a dang long time to wait! I just hope they don't butcher it, like a lot of manufacturers do from concept to production. But I have a little bit of faith...I mean, they did a great job with the New Beetle, it kept the original charm with a modern twist on the styling:

I'm not super crazy about the prototype aesthetic design of the Electric Bus, but I do like the functionality design portions:

Prototype specs sound interesting...369 HP AWD with a motor on each wheel & 300-mile range:

The first VW Bus sold in the United States in 1950 had all of 30 hp. The I.D. Buzz concept sports 369 hp from electric motors on each axle that also provide all wheel drive and the 111 kWh battery pack in the floor of the MEB chassis provide nearly 300 miles of estimated range. Using a VW fast-charge system, it can recharge about 80 percent of its energy capacity in 30 minutes at 150 kW.

Basically sounds like a minivan version of the Model X. Pity it's so far out tho...by that time, Tesla will have the S, X, 3, Y, semi-truck, bus platform, and who knows what else out by then. But if the styling on the bus is cool, I'm sure it will be a big-seller!

In a manner of speaking. It's one of the least reliable vehicles on the road. I believe it has the highest powertrain failure rate of anything VW sells in the 'states, which is saying something. Upon release it was also a compact which managed an EPA rating of 19city 24 highway without a turbo, quite a feat.

Pretty much this. They are horrible cars, literally the only thing they have going for them is that they're cute. They are slow, they don't get great mileage and they are unreliable. The ONLY reason they sell is because people are stupid and buy cars based on emotion and what they see in TV commercials.

That said, I think the electric VW van concept looks pretty good.

We had a New Beetle. It was a really fun car. Loved the design & drove like it was on rails. And literally everything that wasn't bolted down fell off 😀 The holy crap handle. The trunk latch, twice. The 12V plug, three times. Glad we leased it, haha.

I'll keep my eye on it, especially if they release a camper, but I'm not expecting much. A badge on the front doesn't make it a bus. I've had two real buses, and they were loads of fun. That doesn't look like loads of fun.

My wife owned a VW Golf when I met her. It drove fine but yeah, the headliner was falling out of it by year five and it was a pain in the ass to work on. Even the oil filter was buried in a place on the engine that was damned near impossible to get to.

I’ll never buy a VW again. Not in this lifetime.

Lift gate is an integral part of the rear bumper? Frontal impact practically guaranteed to take out wheel$$$$? Ugh. I predict the TCO will be terribly high on this.

Give it 20 years then some hippy will rig up a gas generator in the back of one from a junkyard to power the electric wheels instead of buying a new battery. Then it'll have 30HP again. 😉

Anyone else notice VW is using cameras for mirrors, like on the XL1? Anything to eke out a little more range, I suppose, but I'm curious if this will make it into a production vehicle.

I did mine for about $50 but you know this is going to add $$$ if it's factory, to what will likely already be an expensive vehicle.

So does that display the video constantly somewhere? Or just when you have a blinker on? Completely useless if its the latter.

They display constantly on either side of the steering wheel (no need to turn your head), work at night, and have a wider FOV than a standard mirror. The camera pods have sun shades and they also seem to be more weather resistant. The only area I find them to be inferior to normal mirrors is that, due to the relatively low resolution, distant objects are harder to make out.

VW decided to put the tiny screens in the door panels in the XL1:

That looks horrible...and pointless.

I'm sure VW put them into their economy "supercar" and is showing them on their future electric concepts specifically because they're horrible and pointless.

The VW with screens in the doors looks fine, I meant having them mounted on the dash of the Honda.

When Yuriman is trying to maximize fuel economy removing those wing mirrors reduces aero drag quite a bit.

Yuri, got any data showing the gains? I seem to recall you do.

Due to driving patterns, I haven't been able to have a real apples-to-apples, A-B-A test with and without the mirrors. I installed them in the dead of winter during a snowstorm, and the ideal time to quantify these things is in summer, clear weather on flat ground. I have A-B-A testing for other mods, but for this one all I can cite is the accumulation of all of the little bits I've done to my car. Others have quantified the gain to be between 2 and 4% at low highway speeds in larger and heavier vehicles though.

The 2000 Insight was EPA rated for 70 highway, 59 city, which was later revised down to 61 highway, 53 combined.

Here's 104 miles driving through the rolling hills with no net elevation change, taking it easy:

At higher speeds, I lose (percent-wise) far less economy than most vehicles:

Realistically, there are probably only a handful of (ICE) cars in the country (if any) which burn as little gasoline, and mine is nearing 250,000 miles so it could probably be higher with a younger engine. I'm aware of one Insight owner in Japan with far more modification that got nearly 1,700 miles on the 10 gallon tank, and a few members on IC which have had much higher short trips, but the others I know of are "cheating" by effectively running as PEHVs, charging the batteryand using an aftermarket modification to override the car's normal battery management to drive until it's flat and then not charge on the engine, then not calculating the electricity costs into their MPG.

Not that it matters. We're all having fun. 😛

Anyway point being, I don't care how the cameras appear aesthetically to some random person on the internet. I, just like VW, have replaced the mirrors to improve economy. It's doubly important in EVs because you can't just stop by a gas station and fill up.

As an aside, it astounds me that many Tesla owners (especially Model 3 preorders) are opting for sport rims instead of aero, when Tesla has promised an extra ~15 miles of range on the highway just by having smoother wheels. Camera-mirrors would probably be worth another 10-15 miles. Rear wheel covers, another 10-15 miles. It adds up.

Those specs are for a $100K EV, so i'm sure it won't be a big seller.

That & in five years, who knows what tech we'll have. iirc Tesla already said they have a 500-mile battery, it's just too expensive to produce right now.

Kaido, in my dreams I see you driving a plug in hybrid Pacifica.

Benstillerdoit.gif

Hahaha...you haven't read my post on the Pacifica 😀 Hate it...they ruined the minivan! It sits like a car, even though it's a van, so your knees come up frog-style. Lots of cool features, but it was so uncomfortable to sit in at the dealership that I didn't even take it out on a test-drive lol.

It's perfect....except FCA. I don't think you could pay him to drive another FCA.

Yeaaaaaaaaaah...I'm still driving that clunker...although it's gotten slightly better. I think I'm at like 90 days in the shop. They finally figured out why it was draining the battery (the software was randomly turning on one of the interior lights at night & then it would be totally dead in the morning). It still goes bonkers sometimes, but I just reset it using the battery. Boy that sounds dumb writing it out lol. If I wasn't so cheap I'd just trade it in already, but apparently I like self-torture, so yeah 😀

Part of the problem is that the interior has ruined me...the Renegade is really well laid out inside - nice & wide & roomy - and very few other cars have that same feel inside without going to a much bigger car...and I like having my cars be fairly compact. I'll most likely pick up a gen2 Honda Ridgeline when the prices aren't so bonkers. $42k new for a nicely-spec'd model...might as well buy a Raptor haha.

And part of the problem is, I still really like Jeeps. Wranglers are pretty cool, but FCA's whole system (hardware/software/support) has left me burned out. If I were to ever get an off-road machine from Jeep again, it would be an older, pre-UConnect model that didn't have a warranty & could be fixed easily. I realize I got a one-off lemon, and I'm sure the same thing would happen with any other big car company, so, meh. One funny note is that any advertising, including bad advertising, is actually good advertising. I have a lot of IT clients & use my Jeep for work, and people are always asking about it because it's a bit of a unique design, and I always give them the full, awful story...and so far I've sold about 6 more Jeeps lol. After all that complaining, people would go out & buy them like a week later. What have I doooooooooooooone 😀
