Hi folks,

Not sure if GH is the best place to put this, but it's a CAT-5e question after all, so here goes.

I just got myself a new house, and the constructor did not install any phone jacks in the walls (it's up to the phone company to do it...)

Well, I called the phone company and they ask for an insane amount of money for the job, so I've taken it upon myself to solve this problem otherwise.

I bought wall jacks from the store, but I'm stumped when it comes to installing them... the wires coming from the wall have different colour coding.

Here;'s what I'm talking about:

1) This is the wall jack - note the colours of the wires going to the contacts:

2) This is the wall jack, and next to it is the wire coming from the wall... notice the different colours for the wires:

3) This is a close-up of the wire coming from the wall: note that each of the coloured wires is paired with a white wire, twisted around it. There's also some wire isolation made from something looking like silk, but that's another story.

So... how do I wire my phone jacks? Which wire goes where?

Thanks in advance, folks!

Thanks, but unfortunately, I'm still not 100% sure...

According to the site (and your post), the pairing for a single line goes like this:

1) White wire with Blue stripes --> Green connector
2) Blue wire with White stripes --> Red connector

However... as you can see in my picture, one can't really tell which is blue with white stripes and vice-versa... :(

From what i can tell the blue twist pair the one that is the light blue color would be the solid blue and the other one is the white blue cable
I took your 2nd image and colored in the solid blue wire

I dont know why he says blue with white stripes, but is usually a solid color and one is a white/blue

Oh, thank you very much!

I have an old phone - which I'm not worried about, in case I break it - so if worse comes to worst, I'll wire one jack, connect the phone to it, and if it doesn't work, I'll know i screwed in the wrong cables...

The wires twisted together are the pair so in the link above the blue from the CAT5 goes to the red and the white wire wrapped with it goes to the green. It is probably best to find where the CAT5 runs back to and see what is hooked up to what when it runs into the house.

This.

Check the customer side of the NID (the grey phone box on the side of the house). It should open with one screw.

Check which color pair is connected to the green and red inside there, and copy it when you wire your jacks.

Also, when wiring it up, unplug the phone jack inside the NID. That will cut power to the houses lines. It is also a good place to plug a phone in if you need to check the incoming signal from the telco.
