Electric shavers

I'm thinking about switching from using a razor (Mach 3) to an electric shaver. I'm trying to get as much information and as many opinions about them as possible.

Post your experiences and don't forget to mention the model.

Thanks!

Got 3 razors.

Mach 3 Turbo
M3 Power
Norelco $60 model .. dunno what.

I think the Mach 3 gets a friggn nice shave, but you can cut yourself quite easily if you're not careful or it's your first shave.

Norelco one actualyl does a nice job I think, but it takes several runs over your skin to get it. No cream needed for me at least, maybe just some water and somewhat moist skin will do. Pretty damn good shave too cuz of the lift + cut tech. Cuts are almost non existent. I got cut only once because of acne I think, but other than that how the frick do you cut yourself.

I have a Norelco electric something (~$120 when I bought it) and a Mach 3. The Norelco does a good job - it's not quite a close a shave as the Mach 3, but it takes much less time and I'm always in a hurry in the morning.

have a braun 7505. i only have a light stubble and each charge lasts me ~9 months. takes 2-3 pass to get a clean shave. cheap and gets the job done.

Do you always shave dry with it? If not, have you noticed a difference in the closeness of the save between wet and dry?

Have you tried the Quattro? I use the Mach 3 and the quattro (on and off) with an occassional electric shave here and there. It depends on my mood and the time I have.

I want to try the M3.

I have rather sensitive skin. I borrowed my dad electric razor once and my face turned red. Now, the thing is a cheap peice of junk and probobaly had dull blades. But, Im afraid to invest money in a good electric razor if it could potentially not work out.

I've tried many electric, and a number of disposable razors. I can tell you this, if you want a good shave, you have to go with wetshaving. That means a brush, lots of hot water, and a real razor.
If you can't do that, then stick with the Mach 3, electrics don't really last very long, and don't give a good shave at all. They will agravate your skin and seriously increase acne and shaveing bumps.

I own:

Mach 3 power
Mach 3
Schick quattro

Mach 3 power is the best because I tend to let myself get some stubble and it works better than the standard shaver to cut through the longer stubble

I used to use a Norelco electric shaver...never seemed to work well...always found spots I missed afterwards

Braun Activator 8585

Fiancee bought me this thing a couple of months ago and i gotta say that i love this thing. I used a mach3 before it and found shaving to be a complete chore. With this thing i can shave in a couple of minutes and the best part is no irritation, which i got a lot of when i used the mach3. I don't dread shaving anymore! 🙂

The skin on my neck is also easily irritated.

How would you compare the closeness of the shave to that of a Mach 3?

The reason they bother your skin is because you don't use them long enough.

When switching from razor to electric you have to give it time for your skin to adjust.

And as for lasting long a decent electric razor will last years so I am not sure what you did to ruin yours.

Yea. Depends from person to person. I definitely need some aftershave following my shave with Mach 3, but I won't get all red. Electric shavers definitely don't cause irritation at all. I say stick with electric unless you really need to go Mach 3 for the nice cutting. I'm thinking of switching back because Im fine with both shaves but I don't really want rough skin so soon.

Well it's hard to say, but it's close enough for me.

What's important here is that my fiancee approves the shave and she's one of those that REALLY complains about stubble's and hates facial hair.

Also, if you look at the amazon reviews you'll notice that they are all good.

Braun.

Good razer. Cuts close and doesnt rip my skin apart.
They say the blades are self sharpening, but I'm not sure.
Have had it for 6 months now. Anyone think I should replace them?

For Electric, NORELCO.

Get a decent one and spend at least $80 - $120. EBAY has these at bargain rates as well compared to retail.

I'd ont recoemmend a Electric if you have a thick beard though, they don't get all that close so you will have a 5 O'clock shadow.

I have a Braun activator self-cleaning and a Panasonic linear wet/dry.

They're both great shavers.

Dry, the Braun gets a bit closer, no question about it. The drawback is the holes in the foil are larger (they flex), and it's a bit harsher on the skin. You can more easily shave off little bits of your face that you may want to keep. If you're only planning to shave dry and you have reasonably insensitive skin, the Braun is the marginally better choice, apart from the cleaning issue.

Wet, the Panasonic gets closer than the dry only Braun. It's also a very comfortable shave.

In terms of the trimmer, I think the slight curve of the Braun makes it slightly easier to use. The difference is very small, but noticable.

Cleaning wise, I found the Panasonic to be very convenient. Squirt some liquid soap on it and turn it on under running water. No need for specialized cleaning solutions.

Blade longevity wise, I'm honestly not too sure.

Between the two, I'd choose the Panasonic.

I have a thick beard and my Braun works just fine. I hate Norelco's with a passion, the damn things have a habit of pulling your hair.

Another vote for Braun here. I had one for 5 years and it never had any problems(didn't even replace the blade or foil). Finally I had a small hole appear in the foil and I decided to buy a new one. Again I went with braun and have had no problems. Tried both norelco and remington before, didn't like them.

I've been a fan of the Panasonic razors for a few years. I had a Norelco before I got my first Panasonic back in 2000 iirc and the Norelco couldn't hold a candle to the the Panasonic. Of course I prefer to shave with hot water instead of shaving cream and being a wet/dry shaver the Panasonic is great for this. I just replaced my old one this weekend with this one.
Only shaved a couple of times with the new one so far but it seems to be even better than the last one.

a real razor

I used an electric for years, probably 5 years at least, my skin never did get use to it.
I then went to disposable razors like the Mach 3, it was a great improvement, but I was still unhappy.
The thing about electric razors is that the concept is flawed. You can't expect to pull the hair up and cut it with a dull edge and not hurt your face.
If you want a good shave try a real razor, give it a year to learn what you are doing, and you will not get a better shave anywhere. If you just get a Brush and some decent soap, then use a disposable razor that you can replace every 3rd shave you will see a remarkable improvement in your skin and you will be amazed at how smooth your face is.

EDIT: Useing a strait razor is not easy. It takes some skill, and you have to learn to hone and strop it. You can not just buy one and start to use it, you must first get it honed. At first you might want to start with something like This one.
