I'm looking for recommendations for an electric shaver. I'm looking to spend roughly $100 or less. I would like a unit that I can use in both wet and dry, ie I want to be able to use it in the shower as well as normally.

I pretty much know nothing about electrics, so take that into account. I'm 21, and while my beard isnt too thick in general, the individual hairs are thick... much like the hair on top of my head (at the barbershop the barber has to slow down the clippers, or they will stall out), though it isnt quite that bad yet.

I don't think you're going to find much of a good quality wet/dry for under $50. IMHO spend under $100 on a good Panasonic. I have an ES8023 and like it a lot. But be careful to make sure it's true wet/dry and not just washable. The wet/dry ones are totally sealed and charge through induction.
 
Oh, another thing to keep in mind is that wet shaving seems to be harder on the skin. I've always done dry with an electric, and I tried wet with some soap as lather a few weeks ago. I got cut up all over the place. So I'm back to dry since it works fine anyway. 🙂

Well, by wet shaving, I'm thinking in the shower usage, not lathering up. Does that still happen to you if you dont lather up?

panasonic makes true wet/drys but they will cost more then 100. i have one and i can use it in thw shower and with lather. but it cost me 160. its there top o the line one
 
Hmmmm... the budgetary news doesnt sound good. But maybe I can rationalize...

-How long does the average electric shaver last?
-After the initial purchase, what other expenses does it incur?
 
heh... my shaver's old.. it's a philishave of some sort.. it works fine and i never have to do anything to it other than clean it out ... even the blades are still fine after a LONG time...

the one i had before i got the panasonic a Norelco lasted for 8 yeqars. i just wanted a better one that was wet/dry. it still acually works fine.

the only other cost is teh occasional replacement of teh blades which you do every 6 months or so. and that costs like 20$

I've always had good luck with Norelco shavers. My old corded one lasted me a good 6 years until I broke it. I bought a new cordless Norelco on clearance at Target and I like it even better. I don't bother with wet/dry, personally.

The only expenses I can think of are periodic replacement of the blades... I only did it twice with my old shaver and it was always fine (my facial hair is rather thin, though).
I would also say that if you have not used an electric before, give it a few weeks if it seems like you are not getting a very close shave.

yea it takes a lil for your skin to get used to it

my new panasonic said it woudl take a month for my face to fully adjust if it wasent used to it. it didnt matter but its sweet now.
 
Panasonic Wet/Drys are the best. I forget which model number but get the one with the floating head not the fixed head. One nice thing about the Pannys is that they use standard NiCad AAs so when they go bad, just open it up and pop in a new set.

I only found that out after I bought a new one.

I've had tons of shavers in the past like Brauns and Norelcos but nothing beats shaving in the shower.
 
I wouldn't have thought that using an electric in the shower was a good idea- I'm sure i read somewhere that they rely on the bristles being stiff to chop them easier, which is why you aren't supposed to soften them by lathering up.

Anyway, I've got a phillips electric. Its dry/wet in that you use it dry and then wash it 😉 Took me a little while to get used to it (1-2 weeks) and now its great. spent about $90 on it

Not true. Mine is wet/dry and was only $80.

I've never tried just wet shaving without lather. I assume your skin would get used to it after a few weeks.

There is no way in hell, barring a medical emergency, that any sharp objects are going near my nut sack. Its just not gonna happen.
 
I just started using a Philishave Coolskin from Philips (Norelco in the US apparently). Works great wet and dry, and comes with these little nivea for men gel cartridges which help to soften up your skin. It burns like hell for the first couple of weeks, but after that it's smooth sailing (shaving I suppose) after that. I have this model: HQ 6761. I think it's equivalent to the Advantage 6756X in the US.

BTW, I used to have a Norelco and I didn't like it because it's hard to cut a straight line for my sideburns and goatee with the three little round cutters.
