Electric Mowers: Cord or cordless?

IamDavid

Diamond Member
Lookin to get an electric mower for the yard. Typical in city square yard with no hills or landscaping. I couldn't beleive how cheap the mowers had become since last time I preced them. The cordless are $150 or more than the regular corded. Any advantages?

Thanks

Advantage to cordless is not having a cord.

You got something against cords?

Ya, they should be shunned, and sent to their own island. They cause all the problems in today's world.

I never got over my fears of cordless Electric power tools. I would hate to get it started only to have 15 minutes before a recharge is needed. I would take the cord over the cordless, but a gas over both of them.

No batteries, no cords, no gas.

This is the way to go. I used this type for years, mowing up to an acre of grass. As long as you keep up with the mowing they're very easy to use. They brutally punish laziness though :^D

I've seriously considered that, probably goes well too as it's very lightweight and you can get in tight areas better.

I would also like to try to mod one of those and add a motor to it. That cutting movement is probably more efficient then a rotating blade.

If I was to choose between corded or cordless electric though I'd go cordless. Just as long as I can buy extra batteries and a charger for them, as I'd want to have a standby battery at all times so I don't need to delay mowing.

Now here's what would be cool, a mower that "eats" the grass, burns it as fuel to power itself. You'd need the battery or gas to kick start it so it does eat a bit of grass then it would run the rest off just the grass. The longer the grass is the more powerful it would be, and the more powerful you need it, so it's win win, and it's rather green not to mention no bag or raking.

Which is why they are not appropriate for me. I'm lazy and don't like punishment.

OP, I've got a corded one. The cord reaches as far as I need it to, which is something you need to make sure of before you get a corded one. Plenty of power for mowing after I've let it go wild for three months. My city lot is only 3600 sf, so there isn't much to be mowed.

I have a cordless weed whacker. I wish it was corded. The extra weight of the battery is a pain, and it sometimes runs out of juice when I'm whacking 3+ months worth of weeds.

These are great mowers.

I've never used one of those and wondering how hard it is for taller grass. I've been looking at mowers after firing my mexicans that use to do it cus they sucked.

EDIT:

GEEBUS I checked the prices on these types and they are expensive. $79 for the cheapest one at Home Depot. That's a hell of a lot for something like that.

Taller grass is where you get brutally punished. If you mow the lawn every week, it's as easy as a power mower, if you let it slip... Well you'll make sure that doesn't happen too often :^D

They are not as simple as they look. There is gearing in there to make the blades spin way faster than the wheels are.

Buy cows or sheep. Let them graze. Stupid animal slaves. Then murder them for their flesh.

Laugh the entire time you are doing this.

One advantage to cord over cordless is that the cordless units will have a worthless battery in a few years. Batteries don't last forever and finding a replacement for a sub $200 mower is probably not that easy or not worth the replacement cost.

Also makes the best cut there is. There's a reason why golf courses use this same design. It truly is the best mow you can get.

It is the best cut, but the real reason golf courses use it is because it's the only way to get a 1/10" cut 😛

And actually, for the rough, most courses use a rotary as it vacuums the grass and makes it stand up instead of laying it down flat.

I think the best modification I've seen is several of them put together, with a seat rigged above them, ridden by an Amish kid, being pulled by a work horse.

I saw someone riding an ATV pulling a group of reel mowers. The guy had a radio blasting and was having a good time. This was in St Maarten.
