My guitar's cable jack has died and now I cannot play it with my amp. Like the title says I'm looking for an electric guitar and I like playing heavy metal with the occasional finger picking tune. I don't have much money so I can't spend more than 400-500$ on a guitar. Which brands do you guys recommend? I'm looking at Ibanez and Epiphone right now but are there any good quality guitars from other brands?

This is the one I'm liking the most so far. Thoughts, advice, recommendations are all welcome and thanks for the read :D

Yeah, you can fix the jack.

If you are going to buy a new one, in that price range, I'd look for an Epi LP standard. MF has some Clearance ones for $379 I believe. A huge step up from the one you linked to.

I would hope it would be less than $70 to have it repaired at a shop.
I'd probably just do it myself, though. Got a soldering iron or a friend with one?

I vote you get the Strat repaired instead of buying an Epiphone to replace it....

Alright, I'll definitely ask a few shops about their repair fees. Thanks for the input.

I'm willing to bet one of the wires just came unsoldered. Fenders tend to have shitty solder joints.. you can fix this for free essentially.

If you're playing metal I'd recommend getting a humbucker for your bridge position. I believe the American fender bodies are already routed for this under the pickguard so you'd essentially just need to replace the pickguard (cheap) and wire up the new humbucker.

Yeah, damn if you have an American made strat, skip the epi. Get that guitar fixed!!! Also, Platypus's suggestion is spot on.

I find this really strange because my guitar has 'Made in Mexico' on it and I was told it was a beginner's guitar, heck one of the knobs came completely off after a few weeks of use. Maybe mine is an older model? It looks exactly like the one I posted in the link.

The electronics on my 10 year old squier strat are all messed up, but it's probably like Platypus said, just wires that became unsoldered (it's gotten beat up through the years). I haven't gotten it fixed though, because I picked up an Agile AL-3100 (Les Paul Custom copy) earlier this year and stole my sister's acoustic guitar (she wasn't using it). Plus, I prefer the LP copy and the acoustic because they have a wider nut and they stay in tune better.

Though I do need to re-setup the LP copy, I totally fudged it when I changed the strings and the low E, A and D strings buzz a little.

They make models that look exactly the same in both in the USA and Mexico.

What guitar do you have now? in most cases....any guitar you buy that cost less than $400 is pretty much a toy out of the box. that's not a bad thing, but when you get serious, it will get old real fast. that said....these toys become real fun when you actually start putting your own parts on them and getting a distinct sound. Good pick ups on a epi would beat crappy pick ups on a Gibson (yes....the low end sub $600 Gibsons are pure crap).

edit: you have a squire strat or something? That Epiphone you posted may not be that much better. Save up for a good guitar with humbuckers.

Just wanna say I bought a Cort X6 for around 220? and its an unbelievable guitar for the price... Saw it recommended alot on guitar forums and decided to go for it, couldnt be happier! Theres nothing I dont like about it... Super smooth neck, fast action, stable tremolo system, 2 humbuckers + 1 single coil, and great chunky sound for heavy metal! Now if you want a more varied guitar it might not suit you of course but... Im pretty sure it tops any Epiphone Standard or so (which is more expensive anyway)

You dont have this Fender American You have this Fender MIM If you pay more than $30 to get the jack fixed you are getting ripped off by a soldering iron and some solder and fix it your self. If the jack is bad they only cost a few bucks.
