Fender strat - I always recommend this for most beginers, because of its incredible tonal range. The versitility of a strat is uncomprimised, you can play any thing from the twangiest country to the most ecclectic metal and everything in between. Just look at the strat and guitar history and you will find that the strat crosses all boundries.
hmm, are squier strats generally crappier than fender strats?

Yes, quite abit

I've played only a couple of squiers that I liked, and hundreds that I didn't
My rating scale 1-10

Custom shop 9.5
Am standard 8.5
Mx standard 7.5
Squire 5

hmm ok. well, my budget is up to $200. if you can make me any recommendations for an amp and guitar within that, it would be great. thanks, you've been a great help so far 🙂

i really don't know. probably punk/alternative rock stuff, not metal. i'd like it to also sound decent for acoustic stuff. and max is probably $200.

EDIT:
would this be significantly better than the GRX guitar included in the JS40 package?

That is a pretty decent guitar for the cash.. the problem is that at your price range you're not going to find something that's gonna 'grow' with you at all. Most likely nothing you get in the range will have amazing retention as far as value.

If you are just looking for something to learn on to see if you're really serious about it then a low model fender might be the way to go.. or that yamaha pacifica.. I had one of those like 10 years ago or more and it kind of sucked in retrospect but I taught myself guitar on it, which is probably the point you are at.

If you really are serious about it I would spend a bit more on the guitar.

yeah, well.. more than likely i won't be spending a huge amount of time on it, and i doubt i'll spend enough time to justify a larger investment. i'm basically just looking for a new hobby..

That's what I figured.. no need to get anything spectacular.
I would suggest the yamaha over the squier, perfect for just screwing around.

hmm, what about the ibanez? and which yamaha model would you recommend?

edit: how's this? http://www.music123.com/Yamaha-GigMaker-EG-i242847.music

Sorry if it has been mentioned before but I would go for this.

http://www.music123.com/Epiphone-Special-II-Gig-Rig-i131166.music

I've been playing guitar/bass for 7 years and have been around many different types of guitars. I would go for the stop tailpiece bridge like this has, opposed to the trem bridge on the strat copies. They're just more trouble than their worth.

One of the better things about the epiphone, if you decide to keep playing and decide to get a better amp, this gutiar should still sound pretty decent.

I was mentioning the pacifica from yamaha.

And I would stay away from entry level ibanez guitars, lots of problems... especially with a trem/floyd rose style bridge..

hmm.. now i have to decide between the epiphone and the yamaha. which would you guys recommend?

from my experience, i wish i would have bought a nicer guitar when i started. either that or an acoustic. acoustics are a little harder to play on, so it will make your fingers stronger.

don't get a starter pack, get something nice. have someone at a guitar shop help you out. can't go wrong with epiphones or maybe a lower end gibson (SG, some les pauls) or even used ones.

In your price range Pawn shop or ebay!

Any new guitar+amp combo under $200 is a waste of money, period.

My last words🙂 I,m leaving now
