Electric guitar/amp question

So I've had this electric guitar for a few months now, but I've mainly been playing an acoustic I have. I've only been playing around with guitars for like 3 months now so I'm quite noobish.

Anyway, I have a crap small amp that I want to replace. Its probably got a 10" speaker or so in there, but its a good size for me considering I'm a rookie and I live in an apartment. Anyone recommend any small sized amps to practice with? Price is quite an issue, as I'm a stereotypical broke student. $100 or so range if thats even possible, could probably wait a few months and up that to around $300 if that will get me a much better amp.

Also, when I play multiple strings at the same time, it tends to sound more and more like just distorted noise, not notes/chords. I bet its just the crap amp, but was curious if it was possible that the pickups on the guitar are shot? Do they even go bad? The guitar is old, probably 30 years old, it was my uncles before he passed away a long time ago, so it has been sitting around for 25 years. I did take it to a guitar shop and have them restring it and they replaced the tuning pegs because they were breaking.

Any info from guitar smart people is appreciated.

Turn down the gain? Or play powerchords.

I'll get back to you on the amp suggestion. :)

Microcube.

I've seen them on sale for as low as $110. I've got one. It's a very sturdy, fun little critter. Great modeling effects and more than enough volume to annoy the neighbors.

These are all you need for the money

Great amp.....you can turn the volume down but leave the watts up on the tube so you can keep the tube sound at low volume (when you want it low)....excellent preset sounds...be sure to get the footswitch

If your looking to spend some money try out the Fender DeVille.....oh yeah!! And the volume goes to 12 :D

Thanks for the input all, its very much appreciated. Will most likely save up and get the 15watt vox, though the size on the cube is very tempting.

Agree Vox are killer. What is the make of the Guitar, being that old id love to see a picture!

Its not a Gibson or Fender or anything fancy. I think the name on there was Encore. Its an explorer rip off. Can't really find out anything about it online so I doubt its great, but it serves its purpose for now :)

Was just going to post that. Microcube= best mini amp out there. It's amazing the sound you can get out of that little thing.
