Ferrari = Class, prestige, & the glorious sound of a gas-powered vehicle with WAY too much torque.

Electric = Cute toy.

So can a Yugo if you push it off a cliff. :)

Pretty neat though but the big question is whether they cam improve the range and how much of that 90 miles range is available when you consistant;y accelerate under full load.

The Electric car does not have a clutch and gear changes, so it goes in one continuous accel!

Is this a first? I've always heard engineers talking about how electric motors are really torquey and that cars powered by them could out-accelerate cars powered by combustion engines.

Hey, I love Ferraris as much as the next guy, and this car is almost certainly completely impractical, but you have to give them credit - it is quite a coup to beat one of the world's premier performance cars with an electric motor.

In a car that light, with that much torque, it's not terribly surprising.

Bottom line is Ferrari's not in any danger from this.

I'll take ANY 8 cylinder car over that electric car in a 1/4 mile.

especially my 67 mustang ;) !!!

Hey, I found this link to an AC Propulsion electric car (pretty fugly BTW) spanking a Porsche 911C4 in a drag race on a wet runway. Pretty neat, though there is no sound.

EDIT: And here is one of the AC car absolutely wasting a Ferrari F355 with sound, and another against a C5 'Vette.

Just wait until the tree huggers romp around town in one of these claiming they are oh so righteous for driving an electric car...until they realize the coal-fired power plant in the burbs chugging away at 125% of its capacity;) Seriously, I wonder if the electric power grid could accomodate the same number of electric cars as the oil industry accomodates with conventional cars.

And I can't wait to see a riced up electric car with VTEC stickers and a subwoofer as an exhaust hehehe.

That is pretty impressive. Increase the range, bring down the price and build a decent looking car. Then we'll talk. :)

No. From a performance only aspect, given two motors of equal max horsepower/torque rating, one electric, and an ICE, you will always want the electric motor. Electric motors produce maximum torque from zero rpms throughout the ENTIRE revolution range. ICE OTOH have a triangle looking torque curve, where they produce maximum power at only a peak.

Guys, don't forget they plan to price thing thing between a Porsche and Ferrari, I mean, i'd spend 30k on that, but not 130 :)

Here let me put an end to this debate. According to the site, it is a Ferrari F355.

I notice the article originally cited doesn't mention handling. I wouldn't want to accelerate that fast if the thing can't turn.

No matter how rich I become I will never buy a Ferrari. Useless piece of jewelery in my view. I would consider a Porsche though since they are actually practical enough to drive around regularly.

But personally, in the real world, I think electric motors are going to be the shiznit. In fact, my next car is a hybrid. OK, so they are not completely electric, but it is innovations like these that are going to be adopted. By the way, the hybrid I tried is very torquey starting from the stoplight (for a small engine car anyway), as expected because of its electric engine being used almost exclusively at low speeds. The ooomph at higher speeds is poor obviously, but I'm gonna buy one anyway. :)

EDIT:

P.S. Range? Almost 1000 km!

You spend 99.9% of the time driving under 80mph, what does it matter what the top speed of a car is?

Do you think having a car that goes 180 makes you smarter?
Do you think having a car that goes 180 makes you sexier?
Do you think having a car that goes 180 makes you mr. popular?

I don't think so.

Speeds like that only appeal to racers. If you want to race, go to a race track. I want idiots who race off the streets, so they don't kill innocent people with their stupid stunts.

The electric car is the future, and the Ferrari is already a dinosaur. The efficiency of the electric engine is far higher than the combustion engine (close to 99%, as opposed to something like 35% for the combustion enging).
