according to CNN:

Gore leads Bush in DC and 11 states: CA, CT, DE, HI, IL, MA, MD, NJ, NY, RI, VT -- 171 electoral votes in all.

Bush leads Gore in 24 states: AK, AL, AZ, CO, GA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NV, OH, OK, SC, SD, TX, UT, VA, WY -- 209 electoral votes in all.

Fifteen states, with a combined 158 electoral votes, are considered tossups. They are: AR, FL, IA, ME, MI, MN, MO, NH, NM, OR, PA, TN, WA, WI, WV.

So, those of you in AR, FL, IA, ME, MI, MN, MO, NH, NM, OR, PA, TN, WA, WI, WV... you had better get out and vote. For that matter, all of you registered voters should participate.

Sounds like it's going to be pretty close. I voted already ... it took about 10 minutes to fill out.

Here is a list of the states and their respective electoral votes. CA currently has 54, exactly 1/5 of the 270 necessary to win.

I think it is 54 electoral votes for CA. right now it is a statistical dead heat. Bush has been gaining ground rapidly and gore has been losing many votes to nader.

OK... I was absent this day from school, but me thinks electoral votes are based upon state populations?

I'm sure I could research the answer, but it's so much easier to ask you folks... besides, then someone gets to feel smart and all!

The electoral vote count is based on the number of congressional representitives each state has.2 senators plus however many members of the house of representitives.

Damn, this doesn't speak well of our education system in this country ,does it?:disgust::|

Everyone who's in a state thats already decided, go out and vote Nader or Browne (whichever your likeing)

Your vote doesnt matter in the bush v gore perspective, but a large 3rd party showing in this election would be a great shake up.

yes. we vote the electoral college in. The electoral college votes the president in. Thats why it's so important to vote in your local and state elections.

Reps are determined by population. Senators are not. The number of electoral votes is simply the number Sentaors plus the number of Representatives.

what's to prevent the electoral college from changing their minds after we vote for them? Do they take an oath?
