Just like in 2000 we will be putting a President in office that didn't win the popular vote. America spoke, and was told it didn't know what it was talking about.

False OP (at the moment, very false, though it may change.) There's no need for divisive trolling threads before the final results are actually in. -DrPizza
(I was wondering how the results thread stayed so civil for 6 straight hours.)

You have no idea who will win the popular vote.

I'm pretty sure he will win that too though.

It is the system that was designed. I'd rather have a 2000 or it happen in 2012 than abolish the EC.

This.

However, I secretly hope that Romney wins the popular vote. That may finally push enough states to sign the NPVIC and throw the electoral college into the dustbin of history.

I don't know who is going to win the popular vote. But what I do know is that it is very disconcerting to be in a state where I know my vote for President doesn't really matter. And to be honest that goes for pretty much everyone in the country other than those in a few key battleground states.

Remember, it all comes down to Ohio!

STFU. No matter which side of the fence you're on, if you have even a quarter of a brain you know the current EC system is broken. The most accurate way to call it is to take the number of electoral votes for each state, and divide them by the popular vote for that state and distribute them that way.

Can you guys explain to me the difference in EC and popular vote and what actually matters when it comes to the election?

From what I gather when you get the 270 EC votes, you win... So where does the pop vote come in to play?

1. We don't know who won the "popular vote" yet.
2. The "popular vote" means nothing. It's like adding up the total number of runs in a best-of-seven baseball series you lost, saying you had more runs, and that therefore the other team didn't really win.

Obama is within 200k votes from what I'm seeing. Its a lot closer than it was an hour ago. That said, abolish the electoral college.

For the presidential election? It doesn't come into play, although there will be grumbling if the results differ.

Well, I'm going to need to read up on what the point of voting truly is for then because obviously I don't understand. In my head it's the basic, Jimmy got 10 votes and Susie got 9. Jimmy wins!

No, it is more like counting how many innings were won vs the overall game.

Here's a good video explanation.

Skip to 4:20 ( no pun intended ) for the ' How you can become president with only 22 percent of the popular vote by taking advantage of the electoral college ' segment.
