Election Exhaustion

I'm absolutely exhausted with all the back and forth of pointless distractions, mud-slinging, and so on with this Presidential election. From the primaries right up to now, it just seems incredibly drawn out and almost devoid of actual substantive debate. I realize this is not unusual, but it certainly seems longer than I can ever recall.

What you say? :) Main screen turn on?

I'm sick of it too. The worst part is that I'm afraid that whoever wins will immediately begin campaigning for the 2012 elections :(

I'm sick of it too, and I know why. It's because both candidates are full of shit and haven't told the truth about anything. It's two big fat lairs shouting at each other about who lies more.

Plus (at least for the Dems), this has been going on for the past 2 years.

Canada just had an Election. Announced in early September, finished Oct 14. Within that period every Political Party was abble to get their message out, shoot down their opponents messages, and a multitude of issues came and went forcing the parties to respond.

The big problem seems to be the long assed Primaries and the Dem/Rep selection process. By the time that is done everyone has pretty much heard all the dirt multiple times and have been constantly bombarded with Political moves, statements, and shenanigans. The actual battle between the 2 final candidates isn't too bad for length, it just seems way longer due to the Primaries. Finding a more efficient method to select Party nominees seems to be where the biggest improvement can be made.

I really havent followed it much to be honest. In fact the only video I've watched was the SNL skit with palin and clinton.

It's good to be part of an informed electorate.

Good to hear I'm not alone. Also I'm thankful that nobody has seen fit to introduce any partisan slant to this thread. There are more than enough other threads about the pros/cons of each candidate and so forth, so it's nice to have just a breather thread that is just about the OP premise.

How is this different from previous elections? There was a lot of slandering, name calling and negative campaigning in the previous elections.

The election campaigns are entertaining, but the ads on tv are wearing me out. The only thing that makes them bearable is when the news shows report the outrageous amounts being spent and then break for four minutes of political commercials. It's going to a profitable year at your local tv station!

I'm ready for the election to be over, but I felt a lot better after voting early yesterday. If your state has early voting, it's better to get it done and over with, as there were lines with waits up to 30 minutes or longer is some places here in Texas.

Vote now or NOV 4, its not a dimes worth of difference. Just 13 more days and it will be all over but the crying. But on November 5. 2008, its will be time to start campaign 2012.

Just when I think I'm sick of it, I head to my local McCain office and put in 2-3 hours on the phones. I have the best feeling in the world when I leave at the end of the evening.

I'm in favor of a long cycle. The public relations techniques are so sophisticated now that they can create and push opinions very effectively for a period of time.

When the cycle is longer there's more time for the 'rest of the story' to get out - for McCain to go from 'experienced maverick' to what he is now, Barack from 'who is that kid' to having a more accepted image as capable, for Sarah Palin to go from 'spunky small town governor' to 'it was crime to nominate her', for Biden to go from 'who is that crazy old hack' to 'I gotta kinda like him' for many voters.

I'm worried that a short cycle would turn the elections over even more to the marketers.

You are capable of participating in the euphoria of a campaign, but too foolish to have any good sense about the right and wrong of the cause you are involved in supporting.

Well, that's your opinion. I have my own. I've done my research. I've served my country via the military. I can do as I choose. I don't disagree with the Democratic party - however, I do disagree with the extreme liberal and/or social side of the Democratic party. I'm sure it's quite the same for the Democrats, too. They can probably deal with Republicans - but not those with extreme radical right-wing views.

BTW, I'm agnostic when it comes to religion, I don't own a gun and I don't wear flannel shirts. So, make your own assumptions about me and my beliefs, but don't stereotype me into the rest of the Repubilcan supporting crowd.

Thank you,

Thank you,
T2T, since you work for the McCain campaign, can you please give me 3 good reasons (positive things about him) for this independent to vote for him? PS: Don't mention Obama.

Not just you. This election cycle is the culmination of 24 hour news and the internet. The campaigning started the day after Bush won in 2004.

this election has gone on longer. what with hillary declaring she was running for president back in early 2007 it's like we didn't even get a break from the 2006 midterms, which were pretty long and publicized for midterms. it's almost like we've been in an election cycle since 2005.
