I saw a report on this a few weeks ago. Apparently, the elderly are being suckered by the big pharmacuticals to demand perscriptions from their doctors either they don't need or can be replaced by an older form of the same medicine in the form of a generic. ~More Memory Come Back To Me~ Doctors are guilty too of pushing newer drugs because the pharmacuticals lobby them hardcore.
Now before anyone gets upset at the pharmacuticals for trying to make money, get mad at the elderly for being such easy suckers and for having their hands out to the government to solve their problem. My Granny has been on one medicine since she was 20. She doesn't demand a drug coctail everytime something hurts. She knows she's old and will probably never play tennis like on that stupid Caltrait commercial because she doesn't expect more then she can do.
I'll probably be the same way. I'll take medicine if I have to, but the other day I changed allergist and she wanted me to start a daily regimen of four new drugs (I think she had a nifty pen from all of them). Did I follow her advice and drop my wallet at the drugstore? No, I got another allergist who told me "That allergist did research on the Bubble Boy, only problem is, none of us live in bubbles".
