Elder Scrolls vs The Witcher series

So I enjoyed Fallout 3, but couldn't get into Oblivion.

I love the witcher and haven't played witcher 2 yet. I'm waiting for that to drop in price.

Would you think Skyrim is not for me? Or this game going to be different in playstyle to the past elder scrolls games?

They really are apples to oranges. Witcher is more of a traditional RPG, while TES drops you in a sandbox. If you find it hard to get into sandbox type games that don't force you to do the main story arc, then TES still isnt for you

Both are excellent series. Value for money though I think Skyrim will come out the clear winner. You can probably expect a ~45 hour campaign from TW2, I expect you will get more like ~200-300 hours from Skyrim. Of course it all depends on your gameplay preferences. What didn't you like about Oblivion?

it's really just going to depend on your style. I hated the last 2 Elder Scrolls games (w/o mods), and loved both Witcher 1 and 2.

And the person that posts after me will probably say just the opposite.

Well, TW1 was 'ok' but they (imo) vastly improved most everything in TW2. It looks amazing, combat was different (and imo more entertaining), story was a bit better presented. TW2 was a tad shorter than TW1(took me 34hrs vs 52 for TW1), but I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. It will probably go on sale on steam later this year and I highly recommend you pick it up if you liked TW1 (also picks up right where that one left off).

Skyrim is just going to be a completely different character, and really the only similarity is going to be some rpg elements. Might as well just wait on some reviews and user reviews if you are uncertain.

TES is a franchise that relies on mods to make its games playable...

Damn i'm tired of those comments and it's completely off-topic so gtfo.

Elder Scrolls series is a sandbox as someone else already mentionned. If you couldn't get into Oblivion, you'll surely have a hard time getting into Skyrim. But Skyrim look so much better than Oblivion IMO. Sure it's a new engine but overall the feel appears to be better. Can't wait to play it tonight. But it's still the same type of game as Oblivion in it's core.

The Witcher series is more traditionnal and it sets you on a path with some branchs here and there. Still have many things to do but it more linear. It's an awesome series though and The Witcher 2 is one of the best RPG experience out there at the moment.

Both are completely different games and got with the series you enjoy the most. Anyway, by the time you finish TW2, Skyrim will have it's price dropped a bit.

It's a win/win situation for you 🙂

Two different type of games they make and both very good,TW1 has some things better then TW2 ie longer playing time, potions were better ie could drink them during combat, cats eyes was better in the dark IMHO.

The real question should be how will Skyrim compare to Oblivion,I think we are expecting a better game in every area ie graphics, gameplay, story etc....

The Witcher blows TES out of the water for me. The storytelling and characters are far more superior in TW and TW2 than any other recent RPG I've played.

But, as mentioned above, it really is apples and oranges. Most people in this thread are probably going to say TES is better, and that's okay with me. Oblivion has such a boring, generic fantasy storyline to me, which doesn't really help the game along.

The Witcher also has a much better morality system than any other RPG I've played. It's not your standard "Oh look, Commandor Shophord, you can choose to be good, neutral, or evil, herp derp." Rather, there's no good or bad. Everything is a shade of grey. There are some parts of The Witcher that will really make you question your morals. Not to spoil anything, but if you were given a choice between supporting the game's equivalent of Israel (Strong army repressing others to ensure their civilians live comfortably), or Palestine (stripped of basic rights yet use terrorism to further their cause), which would you choose? And which friend would you kill for the other?

Until someone can show me an RPG with writing as phenomenal as The Witcher, it will still be my favorite RPG series.

That is so true. The Witcher series as one of the strongest storyline in any RPGs which TES is more of a light story with strong elements of exploration and free will in your actions.

Both are great franchise.

I liked both Oblivion and Witcher 1, but if you couldn't get into Oblivion then you probably won't like Skyrim. I don't think they're making any massive changes to the game, just improving on what Oblivion was.

I liked TW2, sort of hated TW1, and loved Morrowind/Oblivion. Skyrim looks to be sort of a super version of Oblivion, with improved leveling, dragons, etc. So if you didn't like Oblivion, you probably won't like Skyrim.

Wither1 was great Witcher2 sucked balls. Of course i never made it past the Kayran in Witcher2, but even up to that point it sucked. Too consolized. For TES, i have played all in the series with hundreds of hours put into Morrowind and Oblivion.

it really kind of depends on what you didn't like about Oblivion and what you did like about Fallout 3.

Oblivion was kind of "Here you go. Have fun... in whatever you choose to do". Fallout had a fair amount of free-roaming, but there was more incentive to get back to the main story. if that is what you liked about Fallout 3, I am betting that Witcher would give you more of that.

Uh, what? Witcher 2 was not consolized at all. Not even remotely. Its one of the rare sequels that improves on its predecessor in every way. I think the last games to do it that well were BG1 & 2.

I didn't like like either of the Witcher games and stopped playing them before getting very far. I don't play games for the story, and the Witcher doesn't have much else going for it. Crappy combat, linear,

What I like best about TES is the sense of exploration. You find so many interesting things just wandering around the map. The combat is simple but feels much better than the Witcher's.

I'm confused about why you'd have such different feelings for Fallout 3 and Oblivion? They were very similar games.

If it was Oblivion's bland setting that turned you off (and which completely raped the lore), then Skyrim looks to have a more interesting environment and story.

If it was the level scaling (Oblivion had more than FO3), then I think Skyrim's is closer to FO3's approach.

If you can pinpoint precisely what you didn't like about Oblivion as opposed to Fallout 3, then we can probably help you more.

Saying one is better than the other is like comparing a serious flight simulator to an arcade game where you fly around. Sure you 'fly' in both games, but they are very different.

I love both the TES and Witcher series'. If story-telling and more action-oriented combat is your forte, then TW1/2 will be what you like. If you like free-range exploration and an open world, there is NO BETTER than TES.

You can prefer one or the other, but it's arrogant to say one is 'better' than another. They are very different, and I would argue, both exceptional series.

Can't wait to play Skyrim today after work...

As was stated already by various posters, these are two vastly different games. I hated Oblivion and FO3, but I'm giving Skyrim a chance after hearing all the glowing feedback.

If you care about the story, the Witcher series is just phenomenal.

i'm going to agree with this. i thought a better comparison would probably be Dragon Age vs. The Witcher... those 2 seem a lot closer in comparison... especially the sequels. (witcher wins imo)

really the only thing that compares to TES off the top of my head is other bethesda games
