It might be a BS rumor.
I think its just wishful thinking by folks who noticed how insanely popular ES5 is compared to all the other games. Think about it, we never had so many people quoting and making references to Elder Scrolls until Skyrim, did we?

If we do get it, I dont think it will succeed. WoW is too damn strong. And I dont think it will ruin the Elder Scrolls franchise. They already screwed it up by prioritizing the consoles since ES4.

Truthfully, I'd rather see a Fallout MMO but that will never happen. My concern is that by focusing on an MMO at all we will never see a Fallout 4, much like Blizzard slowed down SC2 and Diablo 3 cuz of WoW.

If it is announced this may figure 2 years to release, minimum. It could be really, really awesome. Here's hoping it isn't just generic WoW clone #2846.

If they keep Oblivion/Skryim style combat I will play an Elder Scrolls MMO. If it's turn based, like WoW and other MMO's I have no interest.

I need the instant gratification of button mashing and twitch based skill to enjoy any game.

I hope that's a BS rumor.

Dammit didn't Skyrim sell like a zillion copies? Why not stick to what they are good at.

Boy do I hope this is not true. Why is everything in the gaming industry about BS MMO's?

Anyone who is interested in story and actions with consequences must understand that MMOs have none of these things. They are basically Facebook with better graphics. "Oh, let's go farm some monsters today". "Oh, lets go grind for a few meaningless hours". Then it's "Let's PvP". Rince, lather, repeat. Ad nausium...

I would much prefer if they would put their programming talent and dollars into a new game. A real game. Not MMO's.

Once you get them up and running, MMO's are basically free money. Thats what EVERY business wants.

Downside is theres a huge initial investment and if the MMO tanks, whole companies can be destroyed. I do NOT want that to happen to Bethesda.

I don't think they can keep it exactly like Skyrim and still have it an MMO.

Most MMOs are third person and I don't see the combat style translating over very well.

Skyrim (and Oblivion more so) are ment to be played from the first person perspective.

It is just hard for me to imagine a TES MMO.

I agree totally! I hope this isn't true. Look at what happened to bioware when they started concentrating on TOR. Please let someone still be dedicated to making quality single player games.

meh.

GW2 will rule them all, and not charge $15/month doing it.

why bother?

I think the people fleeing WoW are going to migrate to that anyway because it isn't a monthly expense, and I imagine they are tired of playing in cartoons.

:awe:

ES works b/c it is single player and contained. same with FO.

😕

I play SKyrim entirely in 3rd person.

why would anyone do it any other way?

Are you being sarcastic? They improved it a bit in Skyrim, but Bethesda still can't make a game that plays halfway decent in third person, mainly due to their crazy hit detection.

For real ? I cannot stand to play Oblivion or Skyrim in first person, it's so clunky and awkward.

Same went for FO3 and NV.

it does suck a bit for casting, granted, but first person blows horribly for this game.

simply blows.

Skyrim sucks for casting, anyway.

Bow isn't as bad as casting, but I still shoot through targets, and that doesn't seem to matter which perspective it is.

sword and shield play in 1st person?

roflsocks.

I'm sure there are enough people out there that will happily gobble this up, but no thanks. ES games are all about the single player do what you want, when you want, however you want + mods. The only multiplayer that would be worth adding is small numbers co-op in the existing moddable world.

An Elder Scrolls MMO would be great if it were extremely heavily instanced. Maybe make the overall world open and shared, but every single other "zone" is instanced (and repeatable) for players or groups. THAT, would be great to me.

The interesting part is that one of the hardest thing about designing a MMO is lore. If the environment you live in is feels contrived and generic no one will stay with it. The Elder Scrolls would give them instant access to enough regions and lore to provide not only a base, but also multiple expansions worth of content. Also, the leveling and quest sytem would be easily adaptable to MMO gameplay.

I would only be interested if it was like original UO in terms of skill gain (which is basically how ES games are anyway) and the freedom of play UO *used to have*. Meaning the world is a dangerous place you could get jumped at any time, none of the carebear pk zones and al lthat nonsense.

But apart from UO the combat would have to be twitch based like an PFS game like the way it is, not something with automated attacks and everything on some arbitrary cooldown timer.

Then it might interest me.

But Id still prefer the single player game.

I think the reason why MMOs are "turn based" and not twitch based FPS style is because of latency. That is why I'm curious to see how they would manage an ES MMO.

I don't think the technology exists to do a proper Elder Scolls MMO (first-person view, real time combat, etc.) and if it did I wouldn't trust a first time MMO dev (even Bethesda) to pull it off right.

If it's conceived as another Everquest-like MMO with rigid class roles and auto target, turn based combat just set in the Elder Scrolls world then they really shouldn't even bother.
