Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

bapenguin: Will there be seamless loading between zones? Does it still load when entering a "dungeons??
Jashin: Yes, that's a very important, and often overlooked part of the gameplay experience.
kathode: We will still be going with loads between interiors and exteriors. This is because it allows us to dramatically increase the detail of our environments in general. You don't have to worry about keeping around or loading on the fly a lot of art for the interiors while you're walking around the exterior world. For exteriors we are doing everything we can to keep loading as transient as possible, including aggressive implementation of multithreaded code. I can't promise a completely seamless experience, but we are doing everything we can to maintain very high fidelity environments and keep loading down to a minimum.
Jashin: Fair enough.
bapenguin: Any plans for dual processor support then? Considering the upcoming dual core processors from Intel and AMD this year, which could be very beneficial.
Jashin: As you can see, bap?s all about tech.
kathode: Oblivion will definitely benefit from a multi-processor setup.
bapenguin: That rocks hardcore!

Interview

The stuff they're saying makes my mouth water...I don't think I've ever done that over a video game before :Q

They're a great developing company.

I wonder...does....hyper threading use a sort of multithreading that could benefit from this?

From what I hear, hyperthreading isn't really multithreading. It just sets up a "virtual core" that actually draws on the same CPU as the physical core. So you would actually lose performance if you tried to multithread with it, because HT isn't meant to have full load on both cores. That would essentially be a 200% load, which the CPU can't handle.

well, that is somewhat incorrect...from what "I hear", HT would give you a little benefit but comparing that little benefit to the dual cores is like night and day. It's not really 200% load, HT just acts like a second core while the real core is just doing all the work that is assigned by HT and the OS....really hard to explain but that's just like a rough rough rough explantion. All i know for SURE is that there are no performance drops using HT. Nobody knows for sure since there isn't any REAL multi-threaded games (not app) out yet.

To OP: It's nice to know that elder scrolls would be multi-threaded, this would surely decrease the load times while in-game by a lot.

well bona fide is right for the most part, but obviosly, you still get a performance boost from HT, and that may perhaps be increased by multithreaded code, but Oblivion will be heaven for an X2. 😀

Indoor / Outdoor loading zones is an experience killer, but oh well.

Yeah I hated in Morrowind when you would freeze outdoors every minute because it was loading a new cell. Maybe they should up the requirements to 1.5GB and load 10 cells at a time.

Of course, they also said that by keeping the loading system, it allows them to make more detailed environments and everything.

Yeah, but think about games like Might and Magic. You had to find actual borders to cross and spend a few days to move between areas, which could affect some of your quests.
Morrowinds setup feels a lot more seamless to me. The whole world is one giant landmass. With the tweaks to the system files, world loading didnt interrupt your experience very often.

It looks like mutithreaded games are coming sooner that everybody was saying.(The people that were saying that X2s were a waste right now becuase multithreaded games werent coming out for another year) Intel wouldnt let that happen.

x2 is suddenly a little more worth it?

Not that X2 has ever not been worth it 😛
well sure, it was worth it if you got a warm and fuzzy feeling just knowing you could multithread your way through games one day 😉

Hmm...if its true that the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion can use multiple cpu's/cores, I built a good gaming computer...and to think that everyone, including AMD and Intel says that duel cores arent for gaming and only for buisiness applications...shame on them, lol.

downloaded and installed the new nvidia beta drivers...the 81.84. Increased duel core performence in games 🙂 CS: Source with 1024x768, 4xaa, 8xaf, and maxed settings used to get me about 174fps with the 78.05 beta...or whatever it was called...dont care anymore 🙂 now with the same settings I get 192fps. Approx. 9.8% increase in performence. Will I notice the difference? no. Would I actually notice a difference if the fps dropped 100fps instead to 72fps? not really...monitor refresh rate is 75Hz. Do I care? yes. Sometimes it sucks being obsessed with numbers instead of just having fun 😛

ps. note my computer specs in signature(assuming it shows up...first time I have posted in the Anandtech forums)

p.p.s. have gone to anandtech every day(possibly obsessively) for the past 3 or so years, but finally decided to get an email account that I could use to actually register at anandtech. (main email is a hotmail account...the email service blocked almost religiously by tech websites for some unknown reason I have yet to figure out)

p.p.p.s Glad to join the community... 😀

p.p.p.p.s. Cant wait till Oblivion comes out...looks like it will be a great game. Downloaded the 21 minute video of it being demonstrated on the xbox 360, and it looked like Microsofts future cash cow is barely able to handle the game...noticed lots of frame per second drops all over the place, as well as screen tearing in some spots. Either that, or my imagination could have been playing tricks on me...should probably take mushrooms out of my diet...especially the ones I grow in my room. (probably necessary to note that neither the Xbox 360 or the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion are out, so neither of them are going to run at top performence, I dont think.)
