It sure is

I can't run it reliably on my GF4 4200 in my native 1280x1024 that my LCD requires

It's really choppy with all the eye candy on (which I could run in 1024x768 no problem). However the scaling to 1024x768 pretty much wrecks the whole point of the eye candy for me
Oh well. Radeon 9700 here i come
Rooster, it's been well documented that the resolution doesn't seem to make much difference for most people, at least at the beginning, perhaps that's changed with recent patches or something. I get basically the same fps whether I'm running it at 1024x768 vs. 1600x1200, so I run it at the highest possible setting for the eye-candy, so you should run it at 1280x1024, I don't think it should make a difference in fps. To help increase the fps, I'd suggest changing the AI distance & shadow settings in your options, and downloading the fps optimizer mod, those had the greatest effect on my game. I can't remember what it's called (I'm sure a link can be found by doing a search in the official modding forums, as well as various Morrowind sites), but I think there are 2 versions, the original one and a newer one for the latest patch. Basically, IIRC you tell the program the minimum fps you want, and it changes the view distance accordingly and dynamically. What's especially nice is that the program actually gives you better viewing distance in some areas than you can get by changing the in-game settings to max (at least on my machine).
Personally, I'd much prefer the PC version vs. the X-Box version, due to the controls and the modding ability. I'm biased, though, because I'm a modder.
