I?m Seeking the Ultimate 21" Monitor under $2,000.00 U.S.
I have looked at Sony's GDM F500R ... but have read that the Eizo F980 is the superior 21? monitor for picture quality. The specs show the F980 with superior refresh rate at 1600 x 1200 @ 109 Hz (max) (2048 x 1536 @ 85 Hz addressable), and the slightly superior pitch going to the F500R ?(F980 w/ .23mm pitch ? F500R w/ .22mm pitch).

I have looked at the GDM FW900 but am primarily concerned with picture quality and refresh rates rather than the FW900?s larger size.

I have located some information/reviews on the F980:

http://www.winmag.com/reviews/hardware/2000/03/0303.htm

? but information is scarce on this monitor.

Does anyone have any experience with this monitor or have viewed both the F500R and the F980?

I have owned and operated the F500R for over a year. No monitor touches it in the world. Deathly accurate .22 dot pitch makes clarity absolutely crazy clear coupled with insane resolutions and you have a champ among 21"'ers. Eizo is no slouch & makes the finest shadow mask monitors period! ...but they will not compete with this Trinitron aperature grill offering from Sony. You can take that to the bank.

(BTW, I have been forcing refresh rates over spec on the F500R for about a year using Powerstrip without event. This Sony unit is a complete work of techical art)

Hi,

I do own F980 and in fact I made my choice over Sony's F500R. Before I bought this monitor, I had store's manager plugging both monitors to identically configured computers, running side by side. I was looking at these monitors in sun-light (near vitrine) and then we moved them to another room so I could check them with lights on and in the dark. After having store's manager occupated for about 3.5 hours (I'm sure he still hates my guts) I finally decided to buy Eizo. I must say it was tuffest decision I have ever made (besides deciding to get married ;) ). Both monitors are great but I found F980 being a little bit sharper and brighter (especially in sun-light) and as far as I can say, it had better focus. I must tell you that I have never used real flat monitor (like F500R), that's why Sony's picture looked a bit "funny" to me. Anyway, you must see both monitors yourself before you buy any of them. And don't forget about video card you are going to use. Make sure that you test these monitors with the same adapter that you will be using in your system. AFAIK there might be some issues with GeForce based video cards and Trinitron based monitors. I wouldn't know, since I'm using MM G400 for my F980.

Cheers,
SB

Does anyone own a Hitachi superscan 812? I have this monitor and love it. Not sure how it stacks up against the monitors listed here. I have been using mine for over a year :) Paid 700dollars for it 1 year ago...
