They're okay, but I personally, I'm not impressed by either. I would be more interested in the vp171b with its 16MS response time or the LM-730. Although I do wish the LM-730 had a DVI connector, but that's really not that HUGE of a deal.

Both the LCDs you mention here have a pixel reponse time to exceed 25 MS (one it 25 the other is 30). That could lead you to see some ghosting/motion blurring, or uninvited effects.

Yup. You need 16 MS response time on LCD for gaming. Anything higher is going to have ghosting. 17 inch and below are only panels with that right now in the US although Samsung and LG has released 19 inch for Korean market with 16 MS just recently. You're going to have to wait until end of this year or early next year to have that in the US.

If you're looking to purchase LCD, look at Dell site. They often run 10% LCD monitors with $20-45 off coupon on top of no tax and free shipping.

I'm tempted to get Dell 1901FP 19 inch for document and web surfing dual setup along with my Sony 21 inch G520P CRT. My Sony rocks for games but I wouldn't mind having nice big LCD for general use. $540 for nice 19 inch LCD shipped isn't bad but technology will get better and prices will drop. I told myself I would wait a year until larger LCD tech matures. Argh. But waiting is such pain. :)

Hehehe, now I am tortured by this 2 lcd, 1760NX and 1901FP. Some ppl said look by spec while some others said use your eyes to judge them... Well, I am pure gamer(MMORPG, UT2K3, WarCraft3). So which one should I choose???

I would never buy an LCD without DVI.

My dad bought an LCD with VGA and he couldn't turn off the stretching of the image to fit his display because that option only shows up under the FPD tab.

If you're pure gamer, I would stick with 1760NX for now. 1901FP will have slight ghosting due to 25 ms response rate. That is if you can live with 17 inch. I can't. So I'm waiting until 16 ms becomes available for 19-20 inch LCD here in the US.

But no current LCD is going to come close to high end CRT for gaming. For text and web surfing, 1901FP should be awesome.

Of course all the 16ms panels are AU pretty much as far as I know and the trade off for speed is they are all 6bit panels of 262000 colours opposed to the 8bit 16.7/2 M colours of the 25ms panels.

Really? I hadn't noticed this mentioned elsewhere. Could you please give me some references?

Thanks.

BTW, I emailed Solarism:

Hi Harlan,

I think LM1730 with DVI input should be coming out with a month or two.

Thank you,

Subject: LM-730

I am in the market for an LCD; I am debating between the viewsonic vp171b and the Solarism LM-730, but I want DVI. So I'm curious to know, when is the next monitor, follow up to the LM-730 (with DVI) coming out? The purpose of this monitor is mainly going to be gaming, so fast response time is a must, as well as any other features to avoid motion blurr, ghosting, streaking, or any other uninvited effects.

Thank you,
Harlan

look at the spec:
Benq says "16.2 million (with dithering)"
Hitachi says "16.7M Colors with FRC circuitry"
Viewsonic even doesn't mention how many colors.
