Either I suck @ overclocking or my Q6600 does. Any advice? Getting bad vdrop

My goal was atleast 3.2ghz(hoping for 3.4-3.6). I've got a Q6600 GO 1.325(shitty vid) and can't seem to get this chip high at all.

It is almost stable @ 3.2ghz(400x8 1:1), but is requiring massive amounts of volts. I've set the volts @ 1.475 in the bios. In cpu-z upon startup it reads 1.42v, but whenever I run orthos to stress all cores the volts drop even lower to 1.37v-1.39v.

Here's my temps w/ arctic freezer 7 pro & TX-2 paste:

Idle:
30-34*C

Running Orthos stress test 100% load on all cores:
50-56*C

Running Crysis/Wic/CoH Opposing Fronts:
42-45*C

My temps seem great. Is it safe to push the voltage higher? Why am I getting such bad voltage drop readings in CPU-Z...I don't get why volts would drop while running othos either. I know my fsb is stable on the mobo and ram b/c I can run it on my previous chip and Q6600 at lower multi's. Do I need more volts to the MCH(don't know what this does) or what?

This member offered the above CPU for sale in this thread without noting that it had been overclocked. I locked that thread and said he could repost his offer as long as he fully disclosed this fact.

He then posted another FS thread, again without stating that the chip had been overclocked and deleted the title and text in this thread.

I restored the orignal title and text to this thread for reference.

You can't hit your OC target but you dropped your multi and are pushing your FSB hard like that?

Put your multi back to stock and avoid making your NB the limit on your OC.

you don't think I can hit 3.2v? If thats the case I'm selling this chip and picking up an E8500.

Do you recommend I run 355x9 for 3.2ghz? What would I set the ram multi to? x2.0 and run a lower fsb?

Any explanation for the drop in volts? How high can I push the vcore?

Are you running this Q6600 on a DS3L?

I do, and my DS3L's do not care for too high of FSB with my Q6600's. The passive NB heatsink is really paltry and to get the FSB up (and stable) you need to bump up the MCH/NB voltage (which makes it even hotter).

The 0.1V drop (i.e. Vdroop) on your chip is not unusual.

For budget boards like the DS3L I fully recommend running the Q6600 at 9x multi and avoid pushing your FSB as much as possible.

I leave my ram at 1:1 and run my FSB at 367MHz for a 3.3GHz Q6600 clockspeed. This required me to lap to the CPU and HSF (Tuniq120) as well as redo the thermal paste on my northbridge heatsink (hot!).

With this I can set my Vcore under 1.35V in the BIOS, Vdroops to 1.26'ish under load.

Your Q6600 may very well suck ass, but until you do what you can to eliminate or reduce the possibility of having a ram or FSB limitation (set your multi as high as it goes) you really can't make any conclusions.

Have you lapped the Q6600 or HSF?

The Vcore can be pushed until 1,5-1,55 V if you have very good cooling, but not with the Freezer. Like Idontcare said, you're pushing your FSB too much. First try it at 355X9 , why overclock the mobo so much, when you have such a high multiplier on the cpu?. You should have read the overclocking sticky first. ;)

And you should know that every cpu has a voltage drop, which is higher under full load ( Orthos stress test) and lower ( closer to your BIOS Vcore ) when idle. Your mobo seems to have a massive 0.1 V vdrop, but that is not a problem really.

I've tried the higher multi and lower fsb...still no sucess. I've got this chip forsale on craigslist with someone interested. I actually just placed an order for an E8500 for $157 shipped...hopefully I'll get ATLEAST 3.6ghz out of that

This, believe it or not is solid advice.:p

I too have a Q6600 ( 1 of 2 ) with a vid of 1.325. It has been a bitch to over clock, probably just because of the high vid. Read many threads, have many personal tests and benchmarks and came to the conclusion that this vid as high as it is just wont pass 3.2 no matter what I did within guidelines. I have tried it on a EP35C-DS3R, and an Intel 975XBX2, which it sits in now, and the results are pretty much the same. I just got it running again ( long story ) and doing more tests, but I know without a doubt that this chip as opposed to my other will not pass 3.2, period.

Also, as for the high FSB, IDC is right about the DS3L board. My DS3R, and my P45 don't have problems going over 400 FSB at all. As for how far? Well, not known as I haven't had to go over 425, for now

It will be a walk in the park.

If your case has the vid card on the bottom area and the cpu above it, do this. Take an 80mm fan and rest it on top of the vid card facing the NB heatsink. This should help keep things cool.

Good Luck

btw - I am doing the same thing with my Asus P5K-E on my 8400 machine, Cheers :D
