Einstein wrote this riddle this century. He said that 98% of the world
could
not solve it.

Einstein's riddle
The situation

1. There are 5 houses in five different colors.
2. In each house lives a person with a different nationality.
3. These five owners drink a certain type of beverage, smoke a certain
brand
of cigar and keep a certain pet.
4. No owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of cigar or drink
the
same beverage.

The question is: Who owns the fish?
Hints

* the Brit lives in the red house
* the Swede keeps dogs as pets
* the Dane drinks tea
* the green house is on the left of the white house
* the green house's owner drinks coffee
* the person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds
* the owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill
* the man living in the center house drinks milk
* the Norwegian lives in the first house
* the man who smokes blends lives next to the one who keeps cats
* the man who keeps horses lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill
* the owner who smokes BlueMaster drinks beer
* the German smokes Prince
* the Norwegian lives next to the blue house
* the man who smokes blend has a neighbor who drinks water

I got the answer as the Norwegian having the fish. Tell me if anyone else gets that. My friend says it's the German.

I believe the German lives in the green house (fourth in row), smokes a Prince cigar, drinks coffee and has a fish for a pet

This is how I derived that it was the Norwegian has a fish for a pet.

Norwegian has a yellow house/water/dunhill/fish
Dane has a blue house/tea/blends/horses
Brit has a red house/milk/pall mall/birds
German has a green house/coffee/prince/cats
Swede has a white house/beer/bluemaster/dogs

When I run all that through all the variables they give you it passes.

Nevermind it is the German. I was mistaken. The man who smokes blends lives next to the one who keeps cats. I overlooked that one.

I remember having to write a program to solve this after we solved it ourselves in school. Stupid extra credit problems. If 98% of the world can't solve this then we are in big trouble.

We used to do these things all the time in school. You make a grid and can figure out who has what by comparing all the info. THey are fun.

Well, I finally got it but I don't think I can actually finish it all the way. Does it really give you enough info to complete it?

draw out a table and take it through process of elimination...i did this in middle school; it isn't that hard once you spread it out like that

I guess the real challenge is how did he arrive at this figure of 98%?

actually the bigger mystery is how einstein wrote it in THIS century ;)

the answer is the german, in the green house(4th from left) drinking coffee and smoking prince.

Somehow I highly doubt Einstein wrote that riddle. And, some people (especially the math and perhaps some computer science inclined) will have no problem solving it. Thanks for it though. I'll add it to my pile of extra credit problems.

Well it never says in the hints that anyone has a fish. Thus the answer could be no one. The last person might just have a lizzard instead. Usually these problems are a piece of cake if you just take the time and write out what it says. This problem I think you have to make a guess and solve it, if the guess is wrong you have to solve it again, repeat. I'll stick to my first answer though: no one had a fish since the probability of the last person randomly choosing a fish is low compared to the total number of pets possible.
