I always thought they were supposed to have 13!

There ARE 13 steeps leading to the gallows though, right?

I was watching a The History Channel show on the people convicted in Lincoln's assassination and they said that it was 8 turns (except 5 for the woman that was hanged because the executioner guy thought her death sentence would be avoided so he just stopped after he was tired)

What's so significant about the number of turns? There is no difference betweeen 8 and 13, right?

If there are not anough loops, the neck doesn't break, and the subject has a horrible death by suffication instead of a relitively painless death by broken neck.

It's the distance of the drop that breaks the neck, not the knot.

There is a formula for figuring drop distance for body weight.

The rope has to be stiff enough for a certain length though, and is stiffened by the turns. The knot is also placed by the subjects left ear so that the break is in the correct spot. (5th and 6th IIRC. Been a while.)
