Looks like they may be a bit late to combate Piracy by going this route but....
The news story

This would have been a great idea had it been started a few years ago....when DVD players existed and DVD writers didn't!!!!

2003? by then I'll have my own DVD burner anyway....not to say I'd use it to copy games, but still....

pirates will just make multiple CD rips for it or something anyway.

Not really, very few people - if any - had PC DVD players in 2000 or before.
They're not even exactly common today.

I never understood why DVD-roms haven't become the standard. DVD drives should reach a price parity with CD-roms, as CD-roms slowly reach obsolescense.

finally no installing baldurs gate like games with 5 discs.. so damned annoying. finally perhaps high bitrate cutsequences.. not those low bitrate vids that look like @ss. even warcraft3 vids look like @ss because they are super low bitrate divx:p u can only fit so much on one cr@ppy cd. at 50 bux a game i'd rather have it on DVD. even my moms lame email machine has a dvdrom drive.

It's because a very large percentage of computer shoppers have to choose between
a CD-RW or a DVD-ROM drive. Which would you choose? (rhetorical question) DVD-RW
drives need to become much cheaper before most people will have a DVD drive in their
computers.
