how can i configure the connection(s) of my hard drives and optical drives to increase performance

current config:

ide 1) m:40 gb maxtor
s:80 gb maxtor
ide 2) m😀vd
s:cd-rw
ide 3) m:27gb quantum
s:
ide 4) m:
s:zip100

does the configuration matter? i thought it might because of the limitations to eide (compared to scsi in speed). for instance, if i was copying data from my dvd to my cdrw i could have performance issues because they are both using the same eide port to send the information?
