its an indicator to potential employers that you can be taught. after you get some experience your references and employment history will count more than your degree, but when you're young and haven't accomplished much it sure does help

Apparently its worth 10's of thousands of dollars.

It seems everyone I know is carrying around tons and tons of student loan debt, basically a debt that is going to haunt them until its almost time to retire.

While love may not be measured by paper it is a good indicator to mates of earnings potential. Would you rather get serious with a highschool graduate or a college graduate? Unless the college grad has no drive, he/she will eventually end up with money, debt and all.

I guess its her opinion that guys who don't goto/complete college aren't looking to better themselves since its a choice to attend college. College doesn't make you any smarter or more mature per se.

Depends on the profession. They don't match as much in the computer field as most. Experience is worth more than a peice of paper. Companies are starting to figure that out...

a college degree today is worth about a high school diploma 40 years ago.
everybody has one of these today, it aint worth jack sh!t. but if u dont have one, you are basically screwed in the current economy when competing with tons of college grads looking for a decent job.

A person with a degree will earn more money over thier lifetime than a person without one. I have read studies that a person with a degree can average as much as 800k over 40 years thats 20k a year more than a person without a degree. The degree shows companies that you can be trained and can stick with something you started. I'm 29 and went back to school last year to finish my degree. Dont get me wrong you can do well without one if you have the drive. I was making 55k a year as a resturant manager but I worked 60-70hrs a week to do so. The way I figure it after I'm done with school I should be able to make at least 70-80k a year doing the 9-5 thing.

My old european lit teacher was taught the lesson on college degrees the hard way.

He was born in a strict Korean family, and he was raised to become a doctor. While going to Harvard (or Stanford I don't remember, but he went to both), he told his dad he wanted to become a teacher, not a doctor. Well his dad disowned him and still haven't patched things up. The last day of class he brought in his stanford diploma and ripped it in four pieces (one for each class he taught). He burnt it in front of us.

I realize that he could probably get another one, but he was a great teacher. He still didn't patch things up with his dad.

As for a college degree, I feel that it should be an accomplishment. Most employers see it as a proof of someone completing hard work.

And about the comment your friend made, he probably wants his future wife to be a hard worker.

I'm sure his perspective would change if he met someone that made a ton of money, and didn't have a degree.

Ditto. It shows employers that you can learn and have knowledge of x subject. You typically have more knowledge then person without x subject degree. Not ALWAYS but typically yes. Experience is everything but most employers do not give out experience to people who have no degree background and just a HS graduate or lower. So to go and get experience a degree sure helps.

As for your friends comment its just a view. A college degree doesn't mean the person is going to be a hardworker. I've seen a lot of slackers get by..........doesn't also mean they can be bothered to work and earn money later in life also. But in general as someone else said a peson with a degree typically will earn more then a peson without.
